Default 1999 CBR900RR timing help

I bought this bike and was told by original owner it need the coils replaced.so i did and it would pop...Pulled the air box off and its popping back thru the carbs.Thought the timing was off cruised the site found timing shematics and even bought a manual...well The only pointer it has is on the right side of engine.I unhhoked timing chain with cams set to thier marks and put pointer on the mark on case and now the pistons hit the valves which i turned motor over by hand slowly so in case that happend..My question is it has a aftermarket TBR ignition plate on the pointer and the mark lines up with the pointer but the valves hit..Is my only option to just bring #1 to top dead center and set the cams or am i looking at this the wrong way...Thanks Jeff....BTW very nice site

You can't install the cams and then get the timing chain over them. you have to align the cams with the timing chain on them, there isn't enough slack in that chain to get it over the both of the sprockets. The only way you may be able to is by taking the clutch cover off and removing the lower sprocket which probably takes a special tool to keep the engine from spinning. You can be one tooth off on the timing marks and the piston will make contact with a valve. But i would check with TBR because they may have instructions different from the manufacturer on the timing.

ok i just put number one cylinder on tdc and aligned my cams and as far as i seen it was hitting all four cycles correctly with out hitting any valves. Im just going to put it back together and see what happens if i bend a valve i buy new ones

You should be ok if the valve aren't touching as you turned it over. It is a whole different ball game when its floating valves though
