Default 100 octane

I was just wondering if putting 100 octane fuel in will hurt or help? whats the deal with it? If it does nothing for my bike, why charge $7 a gallon?

The higher the octane doesn't mean you get more power. There's a lot of threads on here about octane levels (a lot of them are s**t-fights though) Do a search and see what comes up. If anything, you'll be entertained by the heated arguments between some people.

Yup, it won't help. Your motor will run fine on lower octane, so anything higher is a waste. Higher octane just resists combustion more, and is for use in modified engines that would otherwise suffer from pre-ignition on lower octane fuels. It actually has a lower energy density than a lower octane fuel.

BTW, it's only $5 out here.

it cost more because it takes more refining time....and they don't make much of it. And if you were dumb enough to build and engine that NEEDS 100 octane, they got you by the nuts anyway.

The latest craze in "racing fuel" is U4.....a highly oxygenated fuel...but still only 89 octane. Its good for about 3% power increase when jetted/mapped properly...at the price of $5 a gallon., its hardly worth it for street use.

Here's some good bedtime reading....

thanks, i was just curious about it. i live in southern california. i just paid 3.45 for 87octane to put in my truck.

if you use it, does it hurt the engine to go back to 91 octane?

No. But, running more octane than needed in a vehicle which can't take advantage of it (say with knock sensors) is just wasting money and possibly costing you power.

We have Sunoco 100 and 110 (leaded) here. $5.99 a gallon. I use it in my vette mixed with 93 to prevent spark knock, but backing off on the timing does the same.

91 octane will burn fine, 100 may not, only testing will tell you. I use 87 or 89 depending on summer/winter.

For our bikes, use what is recommended, or maybe a little more to compensate for any crap (carbon)in the combustion chamber causing hot spots or higher compression. But given how well modern engines are designed, I'd say these problems are a thing of the past.

Latest Craze? You do realize the VP is no longer manufacturing U4? It's been updated to U4.1 and where are you getting U4 for $5.00 a gallon, try $75.00 for a 5 gallon drum (that's $15.00 a gallon [:@]). Even the new U4.1 is still $13.00 a gallon...

Another thing to know about oxygenated race fuels is that they are highly corrosive and if you leave them sit in your tank and fuel lines for long, it will start to eat away at everything... I accidently left U4 in one of my race bikes over the winter a few years ago and had to clean out the tank, replace all the fuel lines and completely rebuild the throttle bodies. Not fun.

maybe he forget to put "1" at the end of the "U4" part and the beginning of the "$5" dollar part...

then it would make it U41 and $15 per gallon! tada!

now head on into the 600RR forum and listen to the rant about using high octane, etc...of course higher octane than needed makes the bike faster, because your wallet is now lighter!

nevermind jason! went there and you were already there! muahahahha....
