Default 05 RR won't fire

Hey all,

So my bike had been sitting for around a month when I went to start it. I left it with a full tank of 93 octane gas, and I had been driving it fine all winter. It cranked over, fired up for a second, then cut off. I smelled some fuel, and I've heard the fuel pump go as well. After that, all it would do was crank and not get a spark. The battery was fine, since it was cranking strong, just not firing up. I also tried the WOT 10 second thing, which yielded no results.
After trying to start it a few times, I waited until the next day to try it again, and the battery started to die out from me doing it so many times, so I put it on a trickle charge and charged it back up. Also, the engine start switch is on, just to eliminate that.

I've since checked the fuses, drained the gas, and replaced the spark plugs. The bike is getting spark, and I took apart the gas tank and noticed that the injectors aren't spraying fuel. The fuel pump appears to be working, but it's at the injectors where the fuel won't go. I'm assuming the injectors aren't stopped up, since it's weird that all of them are at the same time and aren't dripping ANY fuel. I've also changed the oil in it, since I had it taken apart anyway.

The bike is an 05 RR with 3,000 miles. I would imagine everything should be in fairly decent working condition, since it's such a "new" bike. I don't believe the bike is throwing any codes. The bike is bone stock, except it's been lowered an inch from the previous owner.

Anyone have any similar problems? Any way to try and fix/trouble shoot it?

I'm guessing it has to be something electrical, like an ECM or maybe a bank angle sensor, but would everything work fine except the bike not starting if it were the ECM? And does the bank angle sensor let the bike turn over and just cut the fuel, or will it not let it start at all? This is really baffling me, and I'd be glad to try and find an answer ASAP for all this nice weather coming up...

Thanks

It sounds like you went through all of the common problems. I'm not sure I really have anything to add.

However, on the BAS, it will allow the bike to crank over, it just won't prime the fuel pump. You said you heard the fuel pump kick on, so its not the BAS.

Also, since your getting spark, that eliminates a lot of things it could be. I doubt your ECU would just go out, but things happen.

The only other thing I can think of to check would be the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Im not sure if it would throw a code or not. Pull the vacuum line off and see if there is fuel inside. If there is, the FPR is bad. But it really doesn't sound like thats the issue either. Normally you would have a bad running bike before it quit with a bad FPR. They usually go out slowly, not at once.

Is there a possibility you didn't hook something back up after changing the plugs? I've seen bikes flood out, then people change the plugs and it still doesnt start, only to find out something didn't get plugged back in, so the bike still didnt start, but for a different reason. I think it would be worth rechecking everything, as it sounds like the problem could have been fouled plugs to start with.

sorry I couldn't be more help.

Right. Thanks for the help though. I'm going to go and make sure I hooked everything back up. I'll make sure I check the fuel pressure regulator as well. That may be the issue.

Like I said, the bike only has 3,000 miles and was running fine about a month ago. So, it seems pretty odd to me.

Maybe I'll see if I know someone with a CBR that I can rip some stuff off of and trouble shoot.

Thanks again

also, how would I go about checking the codes on the bike? isn't there something that flashes on the gauge when it's turned to the on? I'm a little new to motorcycles so I don't know these kinds of things

Hey man do yourself a favor there a check your engine run switch and make sure its not giving you problems (bad connection ect) because ive seen more techs scratch there heads over that dumb little switch... Thats really the only simple thing that will give you spark and no fuel..

So,

Yesterday, after dumping some more injector cleaner in the tank, it started up. It's still running a little poorly, (like when I crack the throttle it cuts off), but it's a start. I'm thinking it might be a fuel filter thing or something, since it's now working after I dumped a lot of cleaning agent in it. Anyone else have experience with a fuel filter clogging up?

Is it a 600 or 1000?

Most bikes do not have filters inline, they usually have a screen filter inside the gas tank. Especially since your fuel pump is an internal one inside the tank, the filter has to be before the pump, so its more than likely just a screen attatched to the pumps inlet.

Unless you had someone dump some crap in the tank or used very bad gas, I can't imagine the screen would be plugged. Especially since you only have 3000 miles on it.

Is it possible the fuel line is kinked? Did you remove the tank or tilt it to get the plugs?

Check the fuel tank vent line as well. They can sometimes get ubstructed or kinked and gas won't flow without the vent free. The only reason I am suggesting that is you opened the tank top, which would have put some air into the tank, which would have allowed the gas to flow a little.

Also, when was the last time you filled up? Its possible you got some bad gas, maybe some water in the tank. Alot of times, if there is enough water in the tank, it will pool up by the fuel pump pickup, but its heavier that gas, so it can cause the pump to cavitate and you won't have a steady flow of gas.

Also, you need to be careful and not use too much cleaner. that in itself can make the gas less usable. If the ratio of the cleaner is too high, the gas won't burn like it should and can cause the engine to run poorly. Remember, you only have a few gallons of gas.

How does it sound when its idling? If it doesn't sound right, such as soundling like a twin, you may have a fouled plug. I know they were just changed, but its possible.

If it were me at this point. I would start it, let it run at idle until it reached normal operating temps, then see how it acts. If you do have a plug fouled, letting it fully warm up can cure it.

well, I started it today, and let it run for a bit. It appeared to be running fine.

Clearly, this is a good thing, however I'm not entirely sure that it was the cleaner that fixed it. I had tried using it earlier in the troubleshooting process, and it didn't work the first time, and now it worked all of a sudden.

But only time will tell I suppose. I'll drive it around and make sure it's all good tomorrow. Thanks for the help.
