I didn't have a 1/4" when I did mine so with a regular 3/8" socket, swivel and extension it wouldn't work through the hole in the frame but I went in up top by the fuel rail and I had it in and out in a couple minutes. It was way easier that way

scott thanks for the tip, i got it without having to get the 1/4" adapter.

FYI for all who are wondering:
i got a brand new cctl for my bike(02, 10k miles) upon inspection the NEW cctl was looser than the old one!
SO i just flared the pin like was told on this forum and guess what!?
no rattle!
now im crossing my fingers that the shop will take this one back for not a too huge restock fee.

so flare that danm pin! youll be able to feel the play between the two parts before and after, went fron a .005" gap on both sides to .000 gap. worked perfectly.
thanks for all who have helped and i hope you got small hands if you plan on reworking this little bitch yourself!

ps. driving feels really weird after weeks on the bike, cant get used to shifting at 3k rpm again.
now that is back together i gotta go to work, LAAAATE!@

i take back the no rattle, it still does a tiny little bit from 5000-5200 rpm. leaps and bounds better than the 4500-6200 it was before!
id assume its from the small amount of play in the lifer rod.
for a 20% restock fee i learned my lesson.

I flared the pin on mine cause just like you said the new one I got seemed to have more play than the one I took out that was rattling like crazy. I also noticed that the new one I got from bike bandit had blue dots on it and the one I took out had orange. I have heard something about the difference but I am not sure..

Same here on the dots of my replacement cctl..... 1 blue dod on the removed part and 2 blue dots on the replaced part. Hopefully the 2 blue dots mean that it has been improved from previous part.... LOL!
