Its usually up to 110 or 120 by the time I get the shop closed up so I just take it easy for a few minutes till its up to 160-170.

I usually fire the bike and then start putting my gear on so by the time i'm ready she's generally sitting at about 130 or so degrees. I wont push the back until I reach 170.

I pulled this quote from another one of my threads regarding running "too cold"..anyway, last night it got down to the 50's here in the valley and given the temp will flucuate a little, I was cruising at 168!! Now it will jump up to 172-174 etc..but it seemed to stick at 168 while cruising...For some reason (and please talk me out of it) this seems too cold! I understand cold dense air is what you want for performance but in the same I understand that head/motor temp should be higher than 168 for effecient full combustion/non-knock/pinging. In the summer 90-110 degrees, it runs nice and warm (180-210) but now in the winter (ha..Im from chicago and Im calling the arizona 50/60 degree weather "winter" I should be slapped) it runs at 172 and now 168!!! I beleive my recent coolant change may have something to do with it...I purged as much 8000k old fluid as possible and filled with one bottle of Honda 50/50 (blue bottle) and the rest distilled water...Im pretty sure Im at at least 70% water possibly...Now I know the temps arent gonna go down to freezing, at least not enough to freeze the water I have in there on a long sit overnight (also that little amount of coolant will prevent freezing) but Im starting to feel that Im running too cold!

SO tell me if my assumption is wrong...upon starting the bike, the thermo (I assume stock is a 180?) stays closed while the engine attempts to heat itself...no flow of coolant...then at 180 the thermo opens fully and allows the flow to cool..the thermo stays open anywhere over 180 to maintain cooling...I assume when the temp gets below 180 that the thermo spring starts closing, only allowing a slight opening for coolant flow to heat up? So when Im running at 168 down the street, that thermo should be barley cracked if not damn near shut?! Dosent seem like it. <---Is this all correct? Just trying to learn:icon_playing:

I don't know if it's me, but sometimes on cold night (graveshift), when I get out of work, I have to wait about a minute for the temperature to even show up. In the meantime it reads "--". I like to make sure it's over 120ish before I ride.

Looks like it's been well and truly covered, but for my two cents, I don't take off until the temp starts registering at 97. I bought my 03 f4i new, and I remember the service guy specifically saying to wait until it registered, then I'm good to go. I don't know if there's a reason or not, but I've always gone by that premise. It makes sense I suppose, 'cause it gives enough time for the oil to get up through the engine and the moving parts time to acclimate before putting any load on the system.:icon_shrug:

i usually crank mine pull her out of the garage smoke a cig and put all my gear on then by the time im closing the garage door and jump on her. idle is about 1500 and temp is around 110-130 and in NC this time of year its in the high 50's when i leave for work so it takes a good 5 mins for her to warm up then its grip twist and lean
