ok the book does NOT say 91, it specifically says 87.
and sorry to debunk the myth but running higher octane does not add MPG or performance to your bike/car/any motor vehicle.
The only purpose of the octane levels is to set apart different gas types that ignite at different temperatures. 87 octane lights at the lowest temperature (in comparison) so it is used in most low compression/low performance cars. As you up the compression, (compression = heat) you have to increase the flash point of your fuel so that you prevent what is called detonation. Detonation is when the air/fuel mixture ignites before it is suppose to because the internal temperature of the motor is hot enough to ignite the air/fuel without a spark, this making a "ping" or "knock"ing sound. this is why when you get a vehicle that requires a higher grade gas and you put a lower grade in, this is the noise you are hearing.
running a higher grade gas does NOT improve gas millage and expecially does not improve performance.
now you can TUNE a bike/car for a higher octane... but what you are really doing is increasign timing which increases heat which makes you have to use a higher grade of fuel......... the fuel itself is not.... "better" it just ignites at a higher temp. only difference.

the f4i engine is designed for the pressure/compression created when fuel is burned at a certain rate. So if it's rated for 87 octane and you use 91 octane (which burns at a slower rate) then before the gas can finish burning, it is expelled through the exhaust. Aside from wasting gas, it is also not achieving the targeted compression/pressure of the engine.

Id say run 87. I used to use 91 but after reading and learning more of how engines work I switched to 87. I didnt notice any changes in power or smoothness but my gas milage significantly rose and I dont smell unburnt fuel coming from the exhaust. Sometimes I was sure I could see unburnt fuel flying out the exhaust haha

Just try and make the best of my free time that I do have. Plus I'm single too and don't have kids... well of the human variety at least, lol. I do have 3 dogs, 2 of which are currently in obedience classes 2 nights a week and another that just finished in March (we've been in class non-stop 2 nights a week every week since June of last year... and it's a 1 hr/50 mile drive each way to go to each class). So I stay pretty busy with that too, and mainly just do longer rides on the weekends. I had to work this weekend so we're not getting much riding in this time, but the past 3 weekends in a row my good buddy Scott and I have done between 500-700 miles for the weekend each weekend
