What to cruise at?

Usually when I am just riding around town I keep the bike in 2nd and 3rd unless I go above 50mph. Honestly I rarely use 1st gear except from a dead stop, because I have plenty of git-up in 2nd and I feel like I have more control with a less jerky throttle response.
As for highways, all the speed limits around me in MN are 60, 65, and 70 so being in 5th isnt a problem. At those speeds I am around 5-6,000rpms which has plenty of punch to get out of a sticky situation. (i average 46mpg every tank, just for comparison)
Lastly, are these people trolling when they say they ride in 6th at 30mph? I have had too many situations that require immediate throttle response to avoid an accident, and you simply wont get that in 6th.

Not a dumb question.
I generally keep the rpm@/or above 4k, in town (at 35-45mph speed limits). Any lower and it will hesitate if you try to suddenly accelerate when spotting trouble. Much over 6k and your milage starts to take a hit. Not nearly as fun as wrapping up to 9-10k+ for your shifts but gives a good compromise of brisk take-off and good mpg.

right on.
4-5k around town any less it might hurt if you need to give it gas

well this is surprising to me. Around town i am barely ever out of 2nd gear. Ill kick it into 3rd once in a while but for the most part i stay in 2nd. I dont do a LOT of highway riding but i do do it and i can count on one hand the ties ive been in 5th of 6th gear and thats been due to boredom/wanting to have some fun. So about 90% of my riding is done in 4th gear or lower and i still get great gas mileage, have plenty of throttle response/acceleration when i need it, and for your purposes the engines always between 5-7k rpm

same here I just picked up my first bike F4i 01, and I was wondering what rpms I should be at. I seem to be changing gears a lot when I am in the city getting up to 4th and 5th.. the engine seems like its screaming when I am in 2nd thats why I am always switching gears but still learning lol....

Listen to your engine and shift into whatever gear sounds right. if its boggy down shift, if its whinny upshift. 4th is a great in town gear. Been riding 10 years, if you want to ride around in 2nd and 6th in town go ahead but dont give a couple of up and coming riders any advice cuz clearly you dont have any to give.

My "cruising" rpm is based on what nickp123 said: throttle response. By keeping my rpms higher:
And I measure gas mileage by wallet impact. Filling up the Edge takes $60 every week - 1 1/2 weeks of constant driving. Filling up Ororo takes $20 every week - 1 1/2 weeks of constant riding same distance. Seriously, no contest.
And I think someone already said it: it's a sport bike, not a Prius
- It takes less throttle to get her moving
- There's no hesitation between opening the throttle and her responding to it
- If I do have to rip it open (and I've had to), the response is more controlled
