I had the same question a couple of months ago, did my research and bought a garmin 255w. Within the first 20 day it failed so I went back to best buy and replaced with another identical model and bought the warranty. It works great and I payed 129.00 for it. Johnnyh

The maps are updated by your wallet. Every year there is a new map and you have to buy it. If you buy one later in the year you will get the current years map and not have to buy one until next year. Although its not always necessary to buy the new maps. I only do it every 3-4 years. $100 every year to update 1 side road in your area isnt worth it to me.
This is inaccurate. The map updates for the Nuvi and Zumo series can be bought either whenever you want as a one time deal or with the unlimited updates for a one time price. They update their maps 3-4 times yearly. They map prices sure gone up. I bought my Zumo550 and purchased the unlimited updates for only $105... now its $120..

teko1020,

"the maps are updated by your wallet!"

Classic! I hear ya brother! Love my Garmin but not exactly the best deal when it comes to renewing the maps. kinda like someone who gets you an xmas present that requires you to pay a monthly fee or something. The gift that keeps on giving, right!?

I have the Garmin Nuvi 550 and I HIGHLY recommend it. It's "waterproof", though I haven't tested that yet. It seems to have a very good sampling rate on speed, so it seems fairly accurate. The maps are very accurate so far and the different modes I've found to be very convenient. I've used it on the bike and in the car and have been very happy. Battery life seems somewhat low to me at only 6 hours. (I ran it dead before my long trip on saturday was finished) But if you have a 12V plug on your bike, which I will have shortly, that's a non-issue. Also, you can buy great mounting accessories from RAM to mount it to your handlebars, your steering head, or gas tank. I've gone the gas tank route as I don't have a tank bag for my bike at the moment and I don't want to clutter things up around my controls.

Hope this helps..

Do you guys look for a GPS with a headset jack so you can hear the directions or is it not necessary?

Personally I have a GPS that is bluetooth capable and have a communicator in my helmet.
