Sprockets and Speedometers
Hello!
I've just had my 01 F4i for a couple of months now and the owner before me had a +1 rear sprocket installed. I was looking over the front sprocket and it's getting a little wore out plus the chain is getting rusty too, so i'm going to go ahead and get a chain and -1 front sprocket this weekend.
I was just curious about how all of this is going to affect my speedometer reading. If it will mess it up, will it be very drastic (i.e. +/- 5mph or more)? And if it does mess it up a lot, how do I go about fixing it, or is there no way to fix it?
Also, what is the stock chain size for the bike?

I have -1 front +2 rear on my 01, and my speedometer is between 10 and 15 mph off depending on how fast I go to give you an idea.
You can use this site to figure it out:
Gearing Commander: Motorcycle Speed, RPM, Chain & Sprockets Calculator
Also I believe stock chain for an 01 is a 525 and 108 links.

You should replace the rear sprocket while you're at it - it won't cost you much more, and it's a good idea to replace the chain and sprockets together.
A Speedohealer will allow you to account for any speedometer error, including from the factory (which is like 4-5%). A -1 in front will bring you to around ~9% give or take, as Jeff said. Change the rear sprocket gearing, too, and you'll be up higher. I'm -1/+1 and I think my error rate was like 13% after sprockets and factory error were factored in.

Nevermind peeps, I was doing some thinking and it's fast enough the way it is, Im sticking with 0/+1; I'm just going to order a new stock front sprocket. besides I used a gearing calc and my bike is going to revv higher than I want if I go -1/+1
But I do have a question about chain size, I know it is 108 stock but I'm not sure if I need a larger chain due to the bigger rear sprocket. anyone know if the 108 link o-ring chain will work?
