if you look at most of the mods, there is no funtion, other than the rider like it...
from my riding experience, the only thing to get stuck in the sprocket would be jean legs and/or laces...i ride in sidis so the latter is ruled out...i ride in jeans sometimes and have not have it catch.

 

I wonder if you could put like a thin piece of clear plastic on the inside so you still get the look but also have it covered.
