Default Speedometer question

Ok I have'nt had my bike for long, but in the high altitude and mountains of Colorado it's a dog on the bottomend. I want to switch the front sprocket to help that issue out. My question is how does the speedo get its signal? Directly from the wheel or from engine rpm? I just don't want to run into a speedo issue as five-O is all over the place up here.

Speedo is getting it's info off of the front sprocket. Don't worry about the po-po though, if you change the gearing for acceleration the speedo will read high ( you'll be doing 50 and it'll show 60). You can get a yellow box from black robotics for around $100 and that'll fix any speedo error.
