I start my 02 F4i and let it warm up till the temperature gause shows 120.
I start riding and shift gears at 4000 rpm.
Until the engine temperature reaches 170, I get this trkrkrkrkrkkrrkkrrrk sound while accelerating. I have 93 octane fresh gas in the tank, oil changed recently, all fluid levels are fine, no problems at all once the engine reaches 170.
Is this sound normal?

LOL, the sound is like the engine is made of plastic, or like an electric grass trimmer /edger

 

Does it do it:

Stationary, in gear with the clutch pulled?
Stationary in neutral?
Moving with no throttle and with the clutch pulled?

If it does it at stationary can you hear where it is coming from?



Also how many miles you have on it and have you checked the valve clearances recently?

It does it while accelerating, that is, pull in clutch, change gear, release clutch slowly while accelerating, sound starts now, clutch released completely and still accelerating, sound continues.
No throttle and pull in clutch to change gear, sound gone.

The sound is completely gone as soon as the temperature reaches 170, and doesnt come back for the rest of the ride as long as the engine is warm.

I have about 8200 miles on it and suspect the valves clearances based on what I read on this forum earlier, have not checked the valve clearances.

I also read that some clearance is good, but what I cant understand is why does the sound go away and looks like a temperature related issue

 

what weight oil are you running?

 

I am using Mobil synthetic 10W-40 oil.

 

It is most likely the valve clearances. What happens is when the bike is cold, all the valve train parts are on the "small" side because they are cold, thus they have MORE clearance and therefore your sound. However, as the valve train parts all get up to temperature, they start to get a little "bigger" and therefore clearances get smaller, eliminating the sound. This is just an early sign to get your valves adjusted.

 

You know, Now that you say it is a plastic sound I can relate. I have this god awful sound that comes around 5k and as far as I can tell it is my healight and front fairing rubbing together. In my case, one of my headlight tabs is broken so I attribute it to that. I just put some foam between the fairing and headlights in certain places and it quieted down.
