Default shifting....

General question...

When shifting, what is common practice out there?

And I am talking up and down shifting. I come from a dirt bike background and have recently picked up a '01 600 F4 and am curious about the habits of people, I am having a tough time forcing my self to use the clutch after starting out. And I am not jamming gears, we are talking low throttle here.

Thanks for the advice as much as this seems like a dumb question, I have just heard yes and no on the clutch...

Have a great day and thanks in advance!

use clutch always, unless powershifting. blip (twist) the throttle and let off as you pull in the clutch and downshift to match engine speed with rpms to avoid tire skip

Although I've admittently downshifted without using the clutch several times. Weird feeling.

I'm telling you, this is about to drive me nuts, I am a skilled driver (car) that has been into ProSolo SCCA racing for years with Early Datsun 240 Z cars and this motorcyce thing is a whole new learning process.

The good news is that I respect the bike very much, and yes, it scares the shi* outa me!

So yea, thanks for the shifting advice as it seems like a stupid question, it just downshifts so smooth without a clutch it almost seems as if the gears are made to do it... Again, as much as that sounds stupid.

Today I think that I am going to work on the slow manuvers as this is the hard part to master, and work on employing the "friction zone". I found a great website for those of you that wanna know on a bunch of tips:

www.ridemyown.com/articles/riding/index.shtml

There is some great advice in there (at least for me).

Well I'm off, and once I get some batteries for the cam, I will post those pics.

Have a great day! Perfect riding weather here, now if I can just get the hang of it!!!!

Hey Flyin I loved the link! I'm actually gonna go practice some of that stuff right now. Those slow turns are still a little bit tricky for me and I'm afraid of dumping my bike doing them.

flyin

learned to ride on a dirtbike also... do the same thing with the shifting... and most of my friends do also.. kinda klunky in the lower rpm's but really smooth afterthat from about 4 to 5k taking it easy blipping while shifting. any hard accel. I use the clutch.
