One MAJOR difference is the terrain / style of riding. On highway trips in 5th or 6th gear I get almost exactly 50mpg. However, my normal 3 mile commute is basically up and down a mountain and I get about 32mpg when I'm crusing around town (rarely over 3rd gear, usually in 2nd)

...nothing wrong with riding and shifting "like a puss..."when your riding to work and using your bike over the truck for economical reasons. cruz below 5k, have less "buzz" with less power...no need to rip on it or be ready to rip on it any all times. Espically when cruz' n to work or the store, etc.

Highway riding has HUGE effects on Mileage! One highway ride can increase your Miles per tank by 30-40 miles.

On the highway on the other hand, I am always at least above 7k (usually hovering around 80-85mph) in 6th and my res will light up at 120.
Down 1 tooth in the front. K&N air filter, PC3, Scorpion High mount would be the mods to the the motor/drivetrain.

just throwing this out here becuase some people have speedohealers, and stock speedos are high, making you think you get better mileage

I average 43~45mpg.Stock gearing ,and mods in the sig. 150miles on average before reserve light comes on.This is over a 10 tank average and i fill it up to the same spot everytime.
Gas mileage like others said is effect by MANY things:
1-tire pressures
2-how good of shape your bike is in
3-driving style
4-highway vs city driving
5-how you full you fill of your tank(wether the bike is on its stand or with you holding it straight up when filling it up).
6- brands of gas can effect mileage due to different additive packages they have in them.
7-octane used will also effect gas mileage ,running 89 or 93 in mine nets me about a 4mpg loss(again over a 10 tank average).
Saying your bike gets xxx mileage is not correct unless you average it out over at least 5~10 tank fill ups.
