RE: plugging tire?

Yes but make sure you use a combination patch-plug from the inside. You will need to take it somewhere to have it done unless you have the equipment to mount and balance bike tires. If you're area shops are like mine and charge min labor of one hour it will cost you 80 bucks or so just to do it, so it's not really worth it unless the tire is like new

How much is your life worth?

Get a new tire.

Manufacturers recommend against plugging the tire. If I were in your shoes, I'd plug it, but as above make sure it's an inside plug/patch. IIRC those cure over time. Ride slow until you build confidence.

FWIW, I put a plug in the rear tire of my Beemer. 100mph+ no problems.

I have known alot of guys that have used the combe plug patch and they work great. I would just suggest keepin an eye on the tire frequently. You know like your suppose to everytime you get on it like the manual says.

I would only use something like that if on a distance ride. What's I'm talking about is a patch done from the inside of the tire. They put a chemical on it.

It's up to you, but I had a large hole a new Metz M1 that I plugged with one of those cheap things from the hardware store... worked fine but I decided to be safe and replace the tire a few weeks later. Check out motorcycle-superstore.com for cheap tires, they had M1 rears for like $120 shipped.
