Default Oil Change ?

I looking at my offical HONDA owners manual and it suggests only to change the oil every 8,000 miles! Is this correct? I haved owned other 600 (suzuki) and they have quoted at 4,000 max. Whats up with Mr. Honda on this one? Any Suggestions?

I did my first change at 50 miles because I broke it in hard.

Then at 350, again at 600, then at 1000, and now every 1500 miles.

I also switched to Motul 300V full synthetic at 1000 miles.

That's kind of high... the RR states every 4000 miles. I do mine between 2 and 3000.

I believe that the 8000 mi calculation is based on the assumption that you're using synthetic oil, which doesn't break down like the natural petros. While 8000 seems like a lot, the manual for my car says one oil change every 15,000 mi! It uses synthetic oil as well.

I've got 3000 on my bike and I've changed the oil once since the 600 mi "break-in" change. I suggest that you concede to buying the more expensive ($7/qt) Honda synthetic and stick with it forever. It's better for an engine to have the same type of oil throughout it's life.

Yea I thought the 8k invervals were a little high too. I changed mine at 600, 1500, 3000, and 5000. Switched to Mobil 1 redcap (auto oil) at 5k and kept using that, changed every 5k miles up until recently since I'm having a hard time finding my weight in that oil. I switched to Motul 300v (full synthetic), and then went to Mobil 1 MX4T (also full synthetic), still change it every 5k miles. I don't ride it hard and it's all pretty easy highway miles so 5k intervals seems to work pretty good. She's at 41k miles now and still purrs just as good as she did brand new!

Heheh...yep! And believe it or not the bike is only 1 year 3 months old (bought new 10-17-04), and it did sit unused for a month and a half. I really like being able to ride year round though... I'd go crazy if I had to put the bike away for months at a time!!

I've been able to ride about once every two weeks. I guess one significant upside to living in Ohio is the lack of hurricanes....
