Default Odometer Mileage Question..

......Earlier today I was mentioning to a buddy that I was going to do the LED and PIN light upgrade to my gauge cluster soon, after seeing some pictures from some ppl on the forum who have done it. He told me when a friend of his got it done they sent the whole cluster to the company swho does the swap and they did it for him for an extra fee. He also said the same company reset the mileage on the odometer too "0" for him. Is the odometer the only place that stores the milage on our bikes? I know ome cars store a back up in the ECU, do bikes do the same? My bill of sale reads "3500" the mileage it had when I bought it.Its unethical, but what prevents someone when selling the bike from resetting the milage then riding just pass the documented mileage andselling it? Not that I personally would ever do something like this......but how do you know that when you buy a bike that the mileage on it is true?

Thanks everyone!

Honda stores the mileage count in the cluster on the F4i. On some newer honda bikes and OBDII cars, the mileage count is stored in both cluster and ECU, but if you change the cluster the mileage shown is what is on the cluster not what is in the ECU.

Mileage is only stored in the cluster on our bikes, so if you change the cluster, it'll change the mileage. It's really easy on a bike, so really someone could just swap it out and sell it as super low miles. Especially if they're the original owner and bought it new, it doesn't have any other documented mileage on the title. But really the only way to possibly see is take it to a dealer and see if they can pull up any service history on the bike, which would show the mileage. If it had more miles on it a year ago, well there ya go Dishonest people suck though!

Cars are much harder to change the mileage... some store the mileage in up to 3 places... cluster, PCM, and ABS module. They also store the VIN, and all 3 have to match or it won't show the mileage and set a code (on Fords it'll show just dashes)

Now mine on the other hand, is soon going to read much much fewer miles than it actually has, without me even doing anything to it. 5 digit odometer, gonna roll over 100k and go back to 00000. I could be dishonest and sell it advertising super low mileage... but I wouldn't do that, I'm too honest

I have heard that about Fords...as a friend recenlty "rolled" his over too "0".

I would hate to be on the recieving end of someone doing this to their bike when they sold it just to get a couple more bucks on the sale!

Thanks for the responses!

Well I was talking about my bike, but some cars might still have 5 digit odometers too. Most are digital now though. I know my '94 Ford Ranger I had back in HS was only 5 digit analog, and it went back to 00000 after it turned 100k. When I sold it it only read 24,000 miles! I was honest though and told him it was 124,000

I have a strong feeling A LOT of people cheat on the odometer with these bikes. The number of bikes for sale with 2000 or 3000 miles is a little too good to be true for 5+ year old bikes. In the one full season (Minnesota) I've had mine I've put 9000 miles on it. I feel better hearing you're at 90k+ since I'm planning to ride mine till it dies or until I find a 954 for a reasonable price that is comfortable like the F4i.
