Default noob help?

changed my oil and filter on my 05' F4i and only put in 3 quarts of new oil in. then i got distracted by the Mrs. put the oil cap back on and went for a ride to get some gas. realized what i did at the station so i went home and added another 1/2 quart to get the oil level between the two marks on the sight glass. could i have messed anything up in anyway by only running 3 quarts of oil? thanks

A half quart shouldn't be a big deal.

No biggie, a common practice in race cars is to run the car a quart low on oil. It makes more power by reducing windage (the crank plowing through the oil). I road raced several BMW's for a few years like this and never had an oil related problem. I would not recommend this on a F4i as i do not know where the oil pickup is, and it has a lot less total capacity than a car's sump, but I'd put money on the fact you did no damage, I'm sure the factory adds a little 'insurance' on the oil level line for the people who maintain it every now and maybe then.

Go ride. If you hear or feel nothing within ten minutes of riding then you are fine. You should be just fine.

thanks, how much oil does it take to go from the bottom of the sight glass to the top when the bike is standing vertical like you're checking the oil? thanks a million
