Newbie Questions about RPMs!
hello all im new to the motorcycle world and just bought a 2002 CBR in mint condition but i had a few questions about RMPS and gear changing. I know in the manual it says to change most gears between 3-4K rpms which is when i feel the bike is running very smooth. Well for the first time i let the bike rev up to 5-6K rpms in third and fourth but it starts to vibrate a bit and the bike sounds much different. Is this normal? i had the saftey done and everything is suppose to be ok just checking if im being paranoid being new to all this.

These bikes tend to vibrate and buzz at 5-7k rpm, they all do that and its normal.
now as far as shifting at 3-4k rpm, for me its way too low and the bike really has no power down there. but if you are a beginer then stick to the low rpm's, at least untill you feel confident enough to explore the full powerband of this machine.
I usually shift at 8-10K rpm, on the street and 12-13k on the track.

Hey thats great thank you for the fast reply im sure i will have other stupid question trying to learn more about riding. Do you ride on the streets between 5-6k? it just seems to ride so smooth when the bike is in the 3-4 rpm range. Thats great to hear i was getting worried about the bike but its really not that bad of a sound.

I shift around 12k-14k rpms so I have a feeling it'll handle 6k lol j/k with ya
I shift around 10k on the street if I'm on a recreational ride. For commuting, in town riding, etc I'll generally keep it a little lower, maybe around 7-8k just to keep the sound down a little bit. Shifting any lower than that always seemed a bit awkward to me
what kind of vibration are we talking about? obviously the higher the RPMs the harder the engines working so it will be louder and vibrate a little bit more so it may just be the engine working but its impossible to figure out what it could be without a little better description.
Its possible you may be feeling the CCT(Cam Chain Tensioner lifter), F4is are notorious for bad CCTs. Rev the bike up (in neutral is fine). If you get a distinct rattling between 5-6.5k RPMs its the CCT. Its usually a pretty clear rattling sound (cam chain smacking against the inside of the engine, isn't as serious as it sounds though). If thats what its doing, do a search on the board, there are literally hundreds of threads about diagnosing and fixing this problem
If its not just in that RPM range, your probably just feeling the engine working a little harder. These bikes are originally designed for racing and for shifting gears just under redline. Most of the power doesn't even kick in until above 9k RPMs (the F4i is a lot more balanced than some of the newer 600s though). I agree with keeping it down until your more comfortable though. 3-4k is fine for the bike but since it doesn't have much power in that range, it may bog on acceleration from there a little bit.

Nice bike. Be safe out there, especially since you're a new dad. Get the appropriate gear if you don't have it already, like a nice jacket and gloves...then go with the boots and pants.

i have the gloves now, boots are on order and im going with the wife this weekend to look at jackets! i really love the F4i at first i was nervous about a 600cc for a first bike but i think im old enough now not to get too crazy with it!
