NEW BATTERY.... DEAD ALREADY?!??
Just got a new battery like a week ago. Bike has been running great. When I came to a very slow idle after riding it for sometime the gauges went out,it started to feel slugish, I parked the bike, shut it off. Waited 5 mintues tried to start it up and it made that rapid fire clicking noise no start. Turn the key off, then back on to try again this time when I pressed start button nothing happened at all.
I think the battery is dead, Right??
I put a new battery in the bike a week ago. Even if I do ride in alot of stop and go traffic and today I started the bike like 8 times it should not be doing this with a week old battery.
WHAT IS UP!?!?

is it a cheap chinese battery? it might not have received its activation charge.
See this post:

It could also be a regulator/rectifier going bad... Check the Volts/Amps and post back. Should be showing 12v and something like 8.7 amps when the bike is not running. When she's running the battery should show 14V. Check it out and post back.

flyou, your always on the ball.
but dude when you say check the volts/amps you mean on the battery right?
I read your thread you posted and thanks but it says that if not done right for 1st time battery it can cut battery life down to 12 mos and this has only been like a week or so.
I think it gotta be the regulator/rectifier. Am I right?

yeah it could be the R/R. There's a ton of posts on it with people having the same problem(s). Sounds like it could be. I dunno, could be a bum battery though I suppose...
But yeah if you can kick start it, see if she puts out 14 volts. Might have to rev the engine a couple of RPMs to get it. If not, then sounds like the R/R.

flyou you said:

If its not showing those numbers then your saying it is either a bunk battery or a rr problem?
and if it is showing those numbers then it has nothing to do with the battery?
Is that the point to check it?

Yes.
Bottom line: The F4i has a 12 Volt, 8.6 Amp (just looked it up) battery. If you're showing 12 volts and it won't start, then you probably don't have the 8.6 amps. This is when the battery is by itself, not installed in the bike (or installed in the bike with the bike turned off).
Now it gets confusing a little bit. If the bike is running, the stator needs to be putting out 14 volts to keep the battery properly charged with the engine on. If the stator is putting out 12 volts of charge on a 12 volt battery, the battery will discharge. No way around it. If you're not showing that 14 volts, your battery isn't going to last. Whether it be 18 volts or 9 volts of charge.
Now if it's showing an overcharge, that's bad. That's where the regulator/rectifier comes in. It converts excess charge into heat. In order to convert it into heat, it needs to be properly grounded. If it's not working properly, expect a short-lived battery.

Is there any reason why you didnt initialy think it was a stator problem and suggested the r/r?
