Default Need Opinons

So the other day I was changing my oil and there's a bunch of fine shavings in it. I'm not working right now so I don't really know what my options are. My parents offered to pay to get it fixed but I don't want to dump a couple grand into it considering it's 12 years old.

It's a 2001 F4i, Odometer only says 18,000Km I think around 10-11,000mi. Whether that's accurate or not I don't know. Obviously I won't know what the culprit is until it's opened up but are there any common failures it could be?

What would you guys do? Ride it until she blows, Sell it, Part it out, fix it? or other

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but small amounts of shavings/dust is somewhat normal (considering the trans is straight cut gearing, and the engine and trans share an oil supply).

So we talking small amounts of fine dust, or chunks/large shavings?

Small shavings should be caught by the oil filter. Shavings in oil pan are a bad sign 100% of the time.
I've never noticed a single thing in my dirty oil other than blackness.

But you asked for opinions....
So, ride until she blows, then have parents buy you a s1000rr.

lol well they don't have the money for a new bike, They don't quite understand the whole concept of what may have to be replaced and everything.

I put a new stator cover on and there were a few fair sized chunks wedged in with the flywheel, I'm going to pull the oil pan off and see what's collected in it.

I'm assuming something pretty major

im meticulous about maintenance. everytime i change oil i strain it through a very fine strainer. its so fine you cant see the holes in it with the naked eye. literally, it catches like five or six pieces of sand every oil change. i have counted them, lol.i see nothing else ever. if there is metal shavings in yours thats not normal at all. right off hand, dont know what it might be in your case. do some searches online and you will find some answers. good luck

Yeah but that 4k extra buys you a bike that is actually well built and reliable.
As for the OP's question, there should be NO metal in the oil, ever. Personally I couldn't care less what the age of my bike is, I care about how much I like it. Sounds to me like your more concerned with resale value, which means you should change the oil and sell the bike. If it were me and with your low mileage I would pull the motor apart and see whats going on inside. It could be something fairly simple but if you keep riding it could turn major really quick.

If you're seeing chunks, its time to pull the oil pan and poke around.

yeah just pulled the oil pan there were some little squirrelies like you would see come of a lathe or something. I looked in from the bottom but didn't see any major wear areas big stuff like that would come from

what should I look into in the top end? I also read somewhere it could be clutch plates rubbing the journals or something and i just need to file the sharp edges off... don't know where I read that but not something i've ever heard of... anyone else know or have any info on this?
