Default Need HELP locating vin!!!

I bought a "2006" f4i that has had the vin restamped on it, I went to buy some parts for it and the dealer came out and looked at it and told me it WAS NOT a 2006 but a 2001!!!!! He ran the numbers on the engine and they start with I belive 22 which is 2001, so since the original vin is missing from its normal spot on the frame where else can I find the original vin?? I would like to know the actual year of the the bike because what I paid for it was a good deal for a 2006 but not such a good deal for a 2001! any help would be awesome!!!!!

it matches the new stamped vin, but you can go buy a 06 take the vin stamp it in a 01 and sell it as such. so i wann know if the bike is a 01 for sure and i also wanna know if its stollen so if it is it can go back to the poor guy whos missing it if not then i want some money back, i have already contacted the sheriffs dept and told them whats going on so i need the original vin to run it.

What were the circumstances of the purchase? Did you buy from a private seller, dealer, insurance company?

What is the history of the VIN? I.e. have you checked the history of this VIN w/ the DMV?

Edit: BTW, welcome to the forum

The frame/steering neck is where the original VIN is stamped. Also, when new, there's a VIN decal on the left upper side of the frame. <--However, many owners remove this, which isn't against the law...its just a preference some owners have.

IF your frame neck orig VIN has been grinded down & restamped, its going to be difficult to find out what the orig VIN was. IF your engine is the orig engine to the frame, you can call Honda & ask them if they can give you the VIN that engine was orig mated to.

It's possible that since it was salvaged, a previous owner replaced the motor with one from a 2001.

2001 to 2006 also has visual differences. 04-06 frames and subframes are silver, newer are black.

I don't what state you are in. But in California when you register a motorcycle you have to give them both the frame vin and the engine serial number. if your state does the same maybe you can check with the DMV and see if the numbers have changed.

Yep, that's why I asked if OP had run it w/ the DMV. Also, to check w/ Honda.
