First Speedometer Fails Then Odometer

Sup F4ir's!
I've done some good research for the past few weeks, have looked thru all threads on here, have studied the service manual and have even googled around to see what i could find and am here making this thread as a last resort.

Today I spent from 4 to 10 working on my bike to disassemble her and remove the speed sensor. I cleaned the speed sensor like i've read on the threads here nd put everything back together to find out it's STILL reading 0 and still not reading mileage.

For the experts here are the symptoms: When the speedometer kicks in out of nowhere on the highway it will count miles aswell, so they both come off nd on at the same time, but its disfunctional more then it works. Any input?

I don;t have any info on your issue but I would like to thank you for the pics. These are exactly what Ive been looking for and will guide me in cleaning my vss.

No prob. I'd figure i'd give back to this awesome site. Goodluck! it took me all day, i took my time but it took all day. It's not as easy as you see it in the pics, you'll need to first drain the coolant in a clean container, disconnect both coolant hoses, push the big one on the back to the side to get to the speed sensor, hope all yours needs is cleaning. I guess mine needs complete replacing, weird at 7k miles. But ill jus wait for any suggestions. I defenetly dont wana take everything back apart nd it not b the vss.

today, out of aproximately 70miles of riding, 2.1 miles get calculated to the odometer nd speedometer was working simultaneously, i miss seen that thing i tell ya... i really dont wana spend 60 dollars on a speed sensor vss nd it still no work.

I have what appears to be the same issue with my '01 F4i. It usually works when I first start riding, but after a mile or less, the display goes to 0, then it will display the actual speed, then back to 0. It will usually stay at 0 unless I hit a higher speed, about 60 or 70. Every once in a while when I start the bike, it will read correct, and continue to read correct.

I just replaced the battery and that did not help. I was told that the sensor that reads the output shaft speed can fail, but I'm hoping it's something easier like a relay. I'm also wondering if it could be a bad wire connector somewhere.
