Default Drive Chain Noise

2002 F4i. had the tires changed a couple of weeks ago. Since then I've heard a clicking type noise coming from the chain.

Took it in to the dealer today. They also were able tohear the noise, but couldn't figure out what it was (they only had about 30 minutes to look it over as they were closing). they tightened the chain, but that didn't solve the problem (it was within spec before anyway)

It looks like the chain isn't properly lined up with the sprocket, somehow. The chain appears to ride the top of the sprocket teeth initially, before falling fully onto the sprocket (I think the falling onto the sprocket is what is making the noise). On the inside edge of the sprocket, the teeth appear to be getting worn down(shiny metal)from the chain riding on that edge of the sprocket.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the chain is partially coming off the sprocket then the rear axle has got to be misaligned. Check and make sure the axel is straight. There should be marks on your swingarm make sure they are both at the same marks and your rear axel will be straight.

This sounds right. You just had your tires changed and now the chain is making noise and causing wear to your sprocket. I'd check the axle alignment and if it was off, take it back to the dealer, raise hell and try to get a new chain and sprocket.

that sounds correct...but it's a little surprising that the dealer couldn't figure that out in 30-45 minutes.

Of course they coudln't. They would have the 2nd or 3rd time you take it in and they hit you with an hr of labor each time. Freakin stealorships...+1 on bitching at them and trying to get a new sprocket/chain

when trying to get the rear wheel straight, is it acceptable for the bike to be on the kickstand?

with it on the kickstand, i managed to get the 2 sides within 1 thousandth of an inch of each other, but the chain still rubs pretty badly.

eventually i'll take it back to the dealer that changed the tires...i just haven't had the time.

You need to have the bike on a bike stand so you can properly align them. Otherwise it will still be off.
