Crashed today...

Driving down a street and an old lady pulled out taking a left turn in front of me... slammed on the brakes, hit her rear bumper and went over the handle bars, landed on my head apparently (according to witnesses), so my helmet probably saved my life... walked away with no injuries thank god :icon_angel:

riding an '01 600f4i, headlights smashed, front fairing broken, windscreen broken, side view mirror ripped off and smashed, side fairings majorly scratched, gas tank scratched, passenger seat ripped up, clutch handle bent and messed up... thats all i could tell before i left the scene...

any guesses as to whether or not they will total it out? bike had a clean title before and im not dying to take a hit and have a salvaged title bike... ide rather just get the money for a new one... anyone else had similar crashes?

swoosh 07-21-2010 07:56 PM

sorry to hear that bro....glad you walked thro on ur feet....

i think you should get a new bike or a slightly old one and mod it aesthetically....again glad it wasnt too high speed and your alive....the bike can be fixed/replaced.....

R Dub 07-21-2010 08:05 PM

My guess is they will total it. Glad your okay

zeppelin8778 07-21-2010 08:05 PM

Yep, important part is that you walked away.
As far as the insurance.... yeah, they'll total it.

It's really up to you what you're gonna do, tho. I'm guessing it's technically your fault and that you had collision insurance?
If so, there are a few things you can do.
You can not claim.. and then either fix it or part it out. OR
You can claim... they will total it... then you can either get a different bike or use some of the cash to buy it back/salvage/ and fix it.
Unless, of course, it's her fault.
Then I would definitely go after a new bike. Doesn't sound like a simple fix.

it was definitely her fault. i was going straight through a green light and she was taking a yielding left turn coming the opposite direction. she completely cut me off and admitted fault instantly. i have 3 witnesses to back it

Indiana 07-21-2010 08:56 PM

Fugg man, I really hate hearing bout guys taking a digger, but at least your ok. By the sounds of the damage I'm sure the bike will be totaled, it doesn't take much.

Wow that's really convenient that she admitted fault or it'd be a huge mess. Most likely her insurance will total it so new bike for you! Are you going to stick with an F4i? Glad you're ok! Btw lol, does insurance cover the cost of a new helmet too?? Milk it for a Corsair!

crashking 07-22-2010 10:38 AM

Man glad to hear your ok....Im always so nervous at any intersection

what kind of bike do you want next???

vr6ptstyly 07-22-2010 12:00 PM

surviving is the best part. glad your ok. I got into an similiar crash a few weeks ago as well. Someone asked if they'd pay for the helmet which makes me curious as well, my helmet actually took minimal damage, mostly a few scuffs.

The appraiser came the other day to look at the bike I'm gonna call him and ask if I should send a pic of the helmet as well. Worth a shot. I'll let you know what they decide one, but insurance companies will usually total a bike out, even if things are minimal. GL

insurance already told me they would cover my helmet up to $400 as long as its DOT approved which it is... so yeah im thinkin ill try and milk that one

they should cover your helmet as long as its DOT approved. I wouldnt reuse your current helmet man, those things are made for one blow, then they're done. its not worth a couple hundred bucks to not get a new one and risk your old one failing on you.

Yes - since your helmet made contact w the ground, her insurance is into it for a replacement, plus any other gear you were wearing, or even personal clothing/property that was damaged as a result. Cracked cell phone screen, torn tshirt, if you were wearing protective gear and any of it is the least bit marred due to this, it def is within your right to make sure it gets included in the claim.

That's not fraud, it's getting you and your gear back to before-crash condition.

You def need to be looking into replacing your lid anyway - helmets are a 1 and done piece of equipment, regardless of how strong they seem.

Just make sure that her insurance doesn't dictate terms to you, unless you agree with them. If you had a $700 shoei X-12, then they should reimburse you the fair value of that lid. Their insurance adjusters are supposed to be trying to get their company out of this for as little as possible. Don't agree to anything til you're happy.

well my helmet was a 140 dollar HJC so im not worried about that much...

my jacket on the other hand was a 450 dollar alpinestars and its got some serious road rash on the back... my friends claim its badass, and to be honest, it kinda does look sick, and ill probably still wear it, but i will probably include it in the insurance claim.

the 3 dollar white tee i was wearing got torn up where it hung out the jacket on the back, but i dont think ill make the claim on that one hah :icon_wink:

vr6ptstyly 07-22-2010 03:56 PM

Yea I was def looking into replacing my helmet, it was $300 but not willing to risk it. It'd be nice if the insurance took care of it. Have to call the adjuster.

Normally I don't get into sexism....BUT...I know so many females who get in their cars, and are on their phones before they reach the mailbox, and stay on the phones until they get where they are going, and most times on from there. What's up with that? It's almost like it's a conditioned response to inserting a key into the ignition.

KdubyaH 07-22-2010 05:41 PM

Damn old ladies pulling out in front of people. She was probably all jacked up on 18 different medications and cataracts on both eyes.
My cousin had his bike for two weeks before an OLD woman pulled out in front of him. He swerved off the road to avoid hitting her and he laid it down in some gravel. Thankfully he was geared up and just got bruised up a bit. The OLD lady claimed she didnt see him. Imagine that. A cager not seeing someone on a motorcycle.
After a certain age there should be a mandatory license renewal every couple years and eventually every year. Like an 80 year old man would be too busy to hit up the bmv once a year.
Anyways, glad you survived

+1

I renewed my license last Friday. while I'm sitting there waiting on the printer to spit it out an old lady shuffled in. Looked like she almost needed a walker. Had a spacy look on her face - like she had no idea what she was doing. Instead of following the line around like you're supposed to, she just walked up in the middle of the clerk's windows area and said "I need to get my license renewed". Luckily no one was in line @ that point, so a lady told her:
DMV - "ok ma'am - I'll help you - just walk over to this vision test machine and read the first line"

Old Lady - walks to the chair instead and sits down - then says "I have my insurance card and registration card - but I left them outside in my car"

(This is where my brain starts screaming "Dear lord don't give her a new license!!!!"

DMV - "That's ok ma'am - you don't need those to renew a license. Can you stand up and look into the viewfinder for me?"

Old Lady - (Still sitting) - "They're just right outside, in my car."

DMV - "No ma'am - I just need you to read the first line in this machine up here."

About that time the other clerk handed me my new license, and I didn't see how the rest went. On the way home - I had a discussion with myself that if I could ever help get mandatory license retests (driving and the written) done after a certain age - I would help, and I wouldn't allow myself to bitch about it once I hit that age.

Gotta love cagers...if another car isn't the size of theirs or bigger they pay no attention to it.

TRUTH.... and I've been reading in other blogs about how bikers getting hit are because of young ladies texting while driving or women on cell talking, applying makeup and driving at the same time...... sexism isnt sexism if the habits are a continuous occurrence......

Haha glad my thread started an angry discussion about female drivers with a focus on the elderly

Haha... It is getting good. Wouldn't put it pass the young lady that got me, I think it was more a mix of things. It was Saturday nite, she wasn't local at all, plus she had 2 other ppl in the car which I think was the real distraction.

Talk to the appraiser today as well, the bikes "totaled" even though it's totally not. haha I'll probably just buy it back and fix it anyways pocket some $$$.

eh......still sounding like $800 repairs.... b/w fairing oem $300, per side oem about the same, seat and mirrors, depends on how cheap to get the R title back And if he loved it So much, The chinese body kits are only $500 on ebay, mirrors $30-40 each aftermarket, and seat...$???, corbin i suppose, but if he claims enough on the lid and jacket....I might consider goin for it myself. +'s and -'s on both ends

no sure what you meant there.

Yea I priced a few things out. All said and done should cost me nothing over $1k, and throwing in the DDM HID kit, to get her going again, so in my eyes very worth it. All depending on what is decided by the insurance, so Im not getting ahead of myself.

edit: also about the fairings, I'm trying to stay away from the ebay sets... cbrfairings.com seem to be quality stuff, painted less than $600 not with shipping, which hopefully isn't too steep. Plus you can order a rear seat cowl for an addittion $34 as part of the sets which i thought was nice.

I meant to say I would probably be up to the task of repairing. And the EBAY sets I've seen on the streets aren't so bad. Actually really good quality and I've seen 3 or 4 up close. but the kits sound pretty good especially w/ a cowl

Gotcha, yea the repairs shouldn't cost much and maybe a half days work, so definitely worth a shot. Yea I'm sure the ebay sets aren't all bad but some of the cheaper ones don't come with the heat insulation on the insides, so kind of turned me off to them.

I almost had this same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. luckily she noticed me and i swerved around her. glad to hear you're ok man. go for the new bike :)
