lol

I think the only time I ever downshifted was for experimental reasons, then have come to the conclusion it's not a healthy habit to get into lol.

Well, then thanks everyone. I'll have to change that right away then. I have only put about 1200 miles on the bike since i had it (I bought it with 1200 miles on it as well.) AmI ok or should I be worried about something failing on me now? Any type of maintenance I should do to kind of counteract any damage I might have done?

The transmission is dogtoothed so you're not doing a ton of damage to it, like you would in a synchro'd car transmission, but the question is why do it?

I'm not sure really... I thinkI do it because when I was first learning to ride, I was told it was acceptable to do so. I've done it on 4 bikes since that I have owned. Then I was riding with a friend and he noticed that when we were slowing down, I let go of the handlebars (to sit up to stretch my back) and asked me later how I was shifting with no clutch. I told him how I was doing it and he was like "You can't do that! That can't be good for your tranny!" So, I thought i would ask around here to see if I needed to change my riding style. I think I'll have to go ahead and to that. lol

I'll upshift from 3rd on without the clutch at times and downshift to 3rd without the clutch ..I dont do so on a reg basis and if you do the upshift right from 3rd to 4th you can do a wheelie at 85 mph

Has anyone around here actually broken the dogs off a gear by doing clutchless shifting, or is everyone too afraid to do it so it never happens?

It's funny, you talk to the dirt guys and they're like "you use the clutch?", but you talk to the street guys and they're like "you can shift without the clutch?" [sm=rolleyes.gif]

Why would you not want touse the clutchduring adownshift? That's just stupid. [&:]

Engage the clutch, give a throttle blip to match therpms with the lower gear and when the rpms arein sync, disengage the clutch. Simple...

i used to always do clutchless upshifting... did all the things that would make it the proper way of shifting by releasing the gas n stuff like that. Actually, I noticed I can't even shift up without releasing the throttle.

I never downshift without the clutch though.

Anyways, after a while, my gears wouldn't catch sometimes. Not completely sure it's cuz of the clutchless shifting but I'm gonna play it safe and always use my clutch from now on.
