Clutch adjustment?

Clutch adjustment?
I had some tires mounted and they adjusted my clutch. It used to grab real early, but the tech stated that was bad for the trans? He recommended something about a nickels worth of play. Meaning that it engages rather late. Stating that it would be less work on the trans fork. I like how it used to grab early.
It makes sense to me that grabbing early would reduce wear, but from what he was saying is the opposite. And truth to this?

The way I'm taking is logic is that by adjusting the lever to disengage the clutch later, less seperation of the discs is happening thus possibly still passing a bit of power through to the tranny, but that would seem, *** backwards to me?! I would think it would be worse for the shift forks to change gears under a load (like with no clutch) than completly free. Being too tight is not good though, but I would say more like a dime's worth of play.

Grabbing early means there is very little zone between fully disengaged (clutch pulled in - no power going to motor) and the start of the friction zone. If it were to wiggle out of place a bit (which it will do over time), you could have the clutch pulled all the way in but still be sitting in part of the friction zone. Which is where your wear and tear comes from.
I'd meet in the middle ground somewhere and just extend your grab point a little farther than you're used to.
