Default Checking for CCT trouble

So I'm checking out a an 04 F4i with 9000 miles tomorrow and I'd like to be able to tell if the CCT is in order. I've heard the problem manifests itself as a rattle at around 5000 RPM. Is this right? Can anyone be more specific as to what I'm listening for?

(Search on this forum doesn't seem to be working right now...)

People frequently refer to it as bolts in a tin can - I'd say it's more of a metallic SHHHHH sound from 3-5K - It goes away if you rev it up past that point - and I never hear it any lower. - I also can't seem to replicate it just sitting in neutral (though I haven't tried extensively) - It definitely shows up if you keep it in 1st through that range though.

I just can't decide if it's worth fixing or just live with it - it is a little annoying when driving, but if it doesn't cause engine troubles, I have plenty other upgrades I'd rather spend my $ on...

Then maybe it's related to engine load? Since there's no test rides, maybe I'll ask the owner to ride around a bit. Or can you hear it with clutch in in first? (Not that that makes any sense if you can't hear it in neutral, heh.)

I'll play with it tonight at home and post what I find (that is if someone else doesn't chime in first =-)

My theory... - It has to do with the harmonics of the engine's crankshaft vs. the harmonics of the camshaft - I believe the crankshaft would vibrate differently if it has all the transmission gears moving along with it.

Load could be a factor, I'll rev it up to 3-5K and gently load the engine by letting off the clutch (try not blast through the neighbors' fence) and see if the noise magically appears with load...

only under load will you hear it...in neutral if the part is very worn.

even if it is rattling, its not a big deal, its a common and easy fix.dont let it stop you from buying the bike if everything else is good.

Do they make a manual cct for the F4I. I think I need one too but can't not find a manual one anywhere. Sorry I'm not trying to highjack this thread, just preventing starting a new real similiar one. thanks

It is there in neutral, just harder to hear. Rev it to 7000-8000, hold it for a moment, and very slowly lower the revs. You should hear the buzzing as you come down to about 5000-6000. For some reason it's more noticable this way.
