THE CCTL Thread
Quick question everyone.
I read through this thread and can't figure out the answer to my question (I thought I read it somewhere before, but it must have been deleted).
Is the whirling/whining sound normal or part of a "going bad" CCTL (or in my case, an incorrectly adjusted APE CCTL)?
The sound can be heard in this clip (taken from another recent thread):

Throughout the revving, the whirling noise (like air passing through a small space) is what I am talking about.
My OEM CCTL symptoms were buzzing at a specific RPM.
Any idea if that is just normal engine noise?
Thanks.

Just took my '02 F4i for its first ride tonight. I have a very distinct buzzing from about 2500-3k rpms. Seems to settle down after that. Should I assume this is the CCTL? There's about 16k on the bike.
I pulled up about 9 or 10 videos of F4i's and heard the same "whirling" sound that I thought could be related to the CCTL. Every F4i I heard have the same noise. It's probably a normal component of noise that is produced by the engine or air box or whatever.
I adjusted my CCTL thinking it was not adjusted correctly and I basically wasted about an hour of a morning.

I had the same buzzing type sound at 5500 RPM and when I installed the APE CCTL, the buzzing sound was gone.
I only had 4000 miles on my bike when I first heard the noise. I believe the buzzing noise is the beginning stages of when the CCTL starts causing the rattle.
Just make sure the buzzing isn't something like your keys jingling/vibrating while your riding. If it is not your keys, then it is probably your CCTL.

Thanks for the response. It's definitely not the key, there is no key chain on currently. I suppose I can pull the fairings and see if its anything rattling in there. It is quite loud. I didn't see anyone else in this thread have 'symptoms' of the CCTL at such a low RPM (2.5-3k), which makes me think it could be something else...
I've read that some people also had lower RPM buzzing. I know this thread was shortened a lot.
Hopefully you'll find the issue. Keep us posted.
I went to adjust the ape manual adjuster that the po installed.. I removed fairings, tank, airbox. I can move the bolt but cannot for the life of me get anything on the lock nut... I need to loosen the lock not obviously so I can tighten the adjuster.
Anyone have any tips or tricks and what tools to use. I'm stumped at how close and easy it is to do. But can't seem to figure a setup that works.

Your best bet is to get an offset 16mm or 5/8" wrench. As I adjusted my APE CCTL multiple times because I thought it was too tight or too loose, I was able to get it tight with a regular wrench, but it was much harder to loosen.
One of the previous posters suggested an offset wrench and it worked for me too.
The bolt is 5/8" exactly, but a 16mm will work and will not strip or round the edges.
Any reason why you think it needs to be adjusted?

I hadn't seen it mention and think this could a very simple but somewhat important to ad to this thread:
It makes a huge difference hearing the sound when you are wearing your helmet or not (at least with my Shark RZR2 it does) I always ride with my helmet and never thought the CCTL sound was horrible, but then one day I just rode around my neighborhood real quick without the helmet and it was MUCH louder, I thought the bike was about to blow up before I realized it was just that I was helmet less.
It may be obvious but I was a little shocked and I'm sure other people have been/will be too; something to think about.
