Exclamation cctl or bent valves video

Read up, but not sold on what it is. About to tear apart motor to confirm but would like some direction.

It is 22,000, tuned, ran great, and had newish oil, about 500 miles. Plugs are about 15k old though id say.

I replaced the CCTL with a new OEM unit about 4-500 miles ago.

I had thought I had a slipping clutch due to some power loss feeling around 4-6k. It then suddenly made the loud rapping metal to metal noise. mostly right side it seems. The exhaust still sounds like all 4 are firing. While I rode it home, I noticed the power loss in those RPMs was dramatic, but came back to more power after those RPMS, still rode soft to not kill it on way home.

So far I am going to pull plugs, pull old CCTL and try putting in the old one that was not necessarily bad. See what happens. Is there a way to check timing without valve cover off?

high quality video, sorry big.

The cctl makes a light tapping noise, not a metal on metal noise. Sounds like you need to pull the valve cover and check there first. Good luck.

I had the exact same issue! Took mine to the shop,no word yet, but if I hear anything I will let you know. My guess was the Cam Chain was loose or off its guides... *shrug I dont know how it was still loose after getting a new OEM CCTL but i guess i will find out....

So far, timing is correct, no jump.. and plugs look good. took a peek inside intakes and those valves seem ok too, just a bit dirty. Next is the "new" cctl. Other than that... clutch? or bearings...

New stuff... Gold/brass/copper shavings in the oil. as well as some silvery shavings. But splinter sized gold flakes mainly. they don't seem magnetic

gold/brass colored flakes are typically bearing material... Could be from a multitude of things though since the fluid is shared in the crankcase, transmission, clutch, etc.... if your having problems with your Cam chain tensioner i would check it very good and see if the shavings possibly came from it

not the tensioner, likely crank bearing, about to go out to remove exhaust and belly to wiggle the rods. From what I hear, if it is a shaft bearing on case or rod.. I might as well buy new motor, so I am looking.
