CCTL
yea i have 4900 miles on mine bought it last summer and one day i herd it and i thoght i dropped something down there and it sounds like it is coming from like right behind my radiator but i cant b sure u know
It's not that it is binding up. the shaft inside the CCTL gets a wear mark on it and makes it vibrate at certain rpms. By taking out the plug in the end of the CCTLand putting in the new longer bolt and nut you are realy turning it into a manual tensioner with out having to change the whole thing out. You just hand tighten the bolt till it hits then u lock down the nut against the CCTL so the bolt can not back out or move in thus getting rid of the noise. If your not sure about trying this then I would just replace the whole CCTL or swap it out with a new manual tensioner. But like I said I know a few guy plus myself that have done this and no problems at all and no more noises.
that wear mark on the shaft doesn't wear enough for it to bind and prevent the stock cctl from extending. in fact, as soon as you unbolt the cctl and remove it, the cctl shaft extends like it just seen a naked hot chick.
i am questioning the reasoning behind the mechanic who said that the internals are binding or the weak spring idea. i've done extensive research on this already. just picking your brain.
this mod just makes your cctl into a manual cctl, again, using added tension to get rid of the noise...and really has nothing to do with the stock cctl not having enough tension.
a little bit more tension should be ok, but note that too much and your in a world of hurt. also note that if you keep pushing that bolt through, the shaft side of the cctl will launch out of the cctl body.

If you read what I have posted I never said anything about it binding and I also said that in reality u are making the stock CCTL into a manual tensioner. Also if u read I said "HAND TIGHTEN ONLY". If some1 was to over tighten it it would do damage to more then the CCTL. If you were to do the bolt thing and did go a little to tight you would hear a whinning noise, almost like the sound of a turbo. Read my posts and you will see why it rattles. It's not that it's binding or the spring is week its because the pin that applies tension to the cam chain doesn't move much at all and the vibration from the moving parts in your motor, etc eventually will wear down a spot on the pin, thus making it sloppy which would make it vibrate and and rattle. By inserting the longer bolt as you said you are just applying a bit more pressure to the pin so there is no room for it to rattle around. You are right in saying it could do damage but only if you over tighten the bolt that is why I said "HAND TIGHTEN" bolt thentighten the nut against the CCTL housing to lock the bolt in place. Eventually I would think you would have to replace the CCTL with a stock 1 or a manual tensioner, but from my experiance and from what i've been told once u do this fix u might not have to adjust it for a very long time if at all. I know there is alot of debate about this subject so as I tell people if your not sure then don't do it, take it to a shop and have a new CCTL installed. All I was doing was just throwing out there what I and some friends have done to fix this problem and it's worked for all of us.
