Default bout to change the oil question

who here actually torques the oil drain plug to 22 ft/lbs? that seems pretty damn tight for a 12 mm bolt. also should i change the crush washer. thanks. is it necessary to remove the right side fairing to get to the filter?[sm=icon_cheers.gif]

I use the general rule tight is tight too tight is broke. Never replaced teh washer. You can get teh oil filter out with out pulling the ferrings off, but you will spill some oil on the middle of both farings. Tends to get real grimey after a couple of rides.

It's a good idea to put in a new crush washer.

I have changed the oil without replacing the crush washer with a new one, and never had a problem. It's a lot easier to just buy like ten of them, and not have to worry about it tho. Also, just kind of snug the bolt on there. It doesn't take much. I doubt mine has ever been at 22 lbs., and it has 13k miles on it.

Fairing don't have to come off to get to the filter. Never tourqed the drain plug nor replaced the washer on any vehicle for the past 20 years.

I think 22ft/lbs was thrown around on this board somewhere. But I'm sure you can look it up to be certain.
