Default Battery or Alternator?

For the last few days I get on my bike to go ride, turn on the key everthing turns on then I try to start it then just a click. Then I have to jump it off or try to pick up some speed and pop the clutch. So the battery is not keeping a charge or its not being charged by the alternator. I thought the way it goes is if the engine is running and you take off the ground cable and it dies its the alternator. I tried that and thats exaclty what happen so any help.

Take the battery to your local shop and get it charged and load tested. To tell if the voltage regulator/rectifier is working, park the bike with the headlight facing a wall, rev the engine and see if you headlight dims. If it fluctuates, most likely your reg/rect is working. If you have some testing equipment and a manual, you can diagnose, otherwise just get it to a shop.

Could be...
Battery
Stator
Reg/Rect

What year, make and model bike? When is the last time the battery was changed?

I have a 2001 F4i with about 12000 miles, It might be the original battery. A shop down the road wanted 140 bucks for a new one.

The stock battery is expensive. I bought a no name brand online for $60 and it works fine.

Well back to it maybe being the alternator, I had it running and took off the black cable and it died. I thought that normally meant it was the alternator. Thats what happen to me with my car and it did turn out to be my alternator.
