So if i'm counter steering and leaning far enough to make the turn and not go wide, and look through the turn with my eyes, i should be safe and not lowside?

i.e. you don't just look with the corner of your eyes, turn your head to look onto the intended path or as my msf instructor put it, rest your chin on your shoulder
Yes, AND only lean the bike far enough to make the turn. n00b often lean too far for what is needed. It looks cool, but uses traction that is better kept in reserve.
In town I keep the bike pretty upright. There are only a couple times when I need to catch a "stale green" wen I will put some lean on it. Intersections are dangerous because it's where cars drop all their oil, coolant, and water from the AC. It can get REAL slick.
Go get yourself a copy of "A Twist of the Wrist II" by Keith Code. It will tell you a lot. I also like "Total Control" by Lee Parks. They will give you some good information.
Finally the bike is capable of WAY more than you think it is.

Oh I don't do too many sharp corning w/ massive lean angle on city streets, I'm mostly wanting more info for when i tear up the canyon/mountain roads in my state. Another quick question, if i hit the chicken strips on my tires after getting more confident and leaning more and more, isn't there a chance for the bike to lose traction and lowside because these parts are probably slicker than the rest of the tire...?
Sorry to hear about your bike. Hope the repairs are inexpensive.
Glad to see that you're alright, though.
Just remember, sometimes life sucks, but it's still better than the alternative.
Stay safe man.

Cold tires = bad.
Don't worry about chicken strips. Only insane street riders burn the tires all the way to the edge. Why? Because if you are on the edge of the tire, you have nothing left over for the occasional "oh ****". Burn the chicken strips off on the track or other controlled enviroment.
