Let me say something dumb too.
I always thought the outside of the starter motor was ground and therefore the starter works if mounted in the chassis.
I actually never have seen a starter motor with a negative wire unless the battery was grounded directly on the starter motor. for example an 1997 yamaha outboard motor.(a boat thingy)
