Default testing stator voltage while running

I'm trying to decide if I kneed a new stator or not ..I left the stator harness plugged into the rectifier and poked a voltage meter in to a pair of the three yellow leads on the harness I was only getting like 9 volts at idle and managed to get it up to like 15 volts in the upper rpms ....did I test this properly ? and is the stator likely bad...thanks for any help
