Re-tapping a spark plug hole

welp, po never screwed any sparkeys down with a wrench and never told me, just said its ready to go. w/e anyways saved one of the sparkys but number 3 decided t o blow out the head. the threads are still there so im going to try to retap it, but does anyone know the thread pitch of the tap i need? my buddy has a 3/4 or 5/8 tap he uses on cars and is bringin it over but i haz no clue if itll work. i got a spare head to try all sorts of things so im dong that first. also do i need to drop the motor? i currently have the gas tank air filter and radiator off so i can reach i just dun feel like dropping everything out again

update. found the right size tap after driving around for hours and after retapping the threads the spark plug still just spins at the bottom. looks like i need a heli coil

Yep, you're going to need a heli coil.

JankCibberf2 Aug 29, 2012 09:02 AM

The only problem with this is finding the right heli coil set considering are spark plugs are m10 x 1.0 impossible to find in a store, might be online only

^^^ya unfortunately im not trying to spend 300 bucks to repair something when i can buy a new head for cheaper

Heli-coils are not always the best with sportbikes with the pressure they make around the spark plugs. Sometimes it causes oil leaks, for I have seen this only twice.

Yeh they are spendy.. nice though! The spark ones are more than the one i got, I got my M8 for $60 something off Ebay.

The spark ones are twice that... then you gotta buy the inserts..
