Default F2 Steering Problem/Question

So I have a 94 F2 and I had the forks off to change the seals and bushings and noticed that the triple trees felt like there was some kind of spring or notch to keep them straight. Like you would have to apply a tiny amount of pressure to get them to move from center. Then if you let go of them off center, they would spring back to center. They don't spring violently or need a considerable force to turn, just feel some tension when not "locked" in the center.

Any ideas? I was thinking maybe it needs steering bearings. I had it out for its first ride and it just doesn't feel right.

I currently have 3 f2's in various states. all of mine feel that way when the forks are out. i was concerned at first, but since all 3 do the same, I don't worry about it.

Can you feel it at all when you're riding? It's definetly noticeable when riding. I rode it yesterday and it felt different than my first f2 my f3.

This is worn bearings. The center part is worn and someone has tightened up the t-stem to make it better. Honda uses ball bearings. I replaced mine with a tapered bearing kit. Works fine, but you have to make sure of torque settings as Honda uses preload torque to set the stock bearings. Tripleclamp should barely fall/rotate of its own weight to the side.

+1 to gpfan's comments. There shouldn't be a detente in the steering.
Usual suspect is a lot of wheelies. Time for new bearings. As mentioned,
upgrade to rollers. That should ensure it's the only time you have to do this.

The only trick is re-torquing to spec. The steering-stem nut is a spanner nut,
not a standard hex. You need to buy/make the correct 'socket' to do the job properly.

Here's a pic of a "made" one...

For the rest of the how-to, just do a search in these forums.

Hope this helps, Ern

Thanks for the input, thought that might be the problem. Should have done them while it was all apart. Any idea what the size of the socket is?
