Backfire when you pull off? If you mean when you close the throttle, it could be lean. Got a pipe or stock setup? How long has it sat? Any work done on it? A little more background would help.

How does it idle, cruise, and accelerate? If it does these fine, then you may just have a lean condition with the pipe. If it is a hard start, or the idle is bad and no power, check the plug wire order for correctness. then you can start on cleaning the tank and/or carbs. Did you drain out the old gas?

Pops on deceleration are from lean exhaust.

If you're getting really loud pops, you're too lean.

Get a jet kit, especially if you're running aftermarket exhaust.

Jet kits are available on line or from your local shop. Dynojet or Factory are the two main contenders. check the plug wires only if the bike runs very rough. If it is only popping on decel, it is a jetting issue.

How can this problem be corrected without spending hundreds of dollars on a jet kit?
Would changing the pilot/slow jet stop the popping?

jet kits are about $100. But, I've read you can buy some small washers (Radio Shack) and shim up your stock needles. This will richen up your mixture. No one has said how many of the washers is the magic number, but in my jet kit, they added one washer. Maybe two would do the trick. Depends on the thickness of each washer. It works like the adjustable needles in the jetting kits.

Changing the pilot jet to richer will only do so much. It will help with starting and lean surge when cruising, but will not richen up your main jetting like shimming or re-jetting your carbs. You can also buy the next size up from stock(130) and try that too.

You can get jets here.
