Are you replacing the plates, disks and springs or just a combination of what looks worn? What about the basket, hubor top basket plate, how is their condition, have the dog ears on the plates wore the basket where they fit loose and sloppy? As for adjustment you want a little play on the lever, in turn that will give a little play on the lifter lever (lever on the case at the lower adjustment). You should be able to move that a little by hand. If not the cable is too tight or you put the basket back together wrong, both will cause ware.

not i replaced the friction surfaces, not the metal disks. the metal disks are almost never out of tolerance.
