Taking an engine apart is easy. It's putting it back together that is involved. Maybe you will only need to remove the motor, not disassemble it.

But ask the guy that is going to weld it. He may be able to do it in the bike with the stator and rotor removed. It's just about access.

It should. Ask the welder if it can be welded up.

We haven't even seen the crack yet.....

Yes you can weld it dazed ! I have a 54 engine with a crack under the stator. Pull the engine . Drain fluids. Take it to a pro tig welder such as a moto fab shop and or racing shop . Noo big deal period . And or. Bueller Bueller. Bueller Bueller

Thank you Stealth it has alot of JB weld on it currently but I think it should come off without that much of a hassle. The only thing that worries me is pulling the engine seems hard

it's aluminum.... why wouldn't it weld? the problem with welding aluminum is that you have to heat treat it first to make a good weld. but you're not going to ever find a welding shop that a)doesn't know that b)doesn't have a torch or some other means of heat treating it, and c)hasn't worked with aluminum before

dazed, you remember the whole "crack-between-cyl-1&2" problem some of the 954's had. you could easily weld those up.

this would be a lot easier if you'd just take a picture of it..... it might need to be taken apart if there is a crack with an oil galley....

and to be honest, even if you have to take the motor apart - i practically have a how-to guide in my fighter thread on how to put the motor back together.

oil galley? The crack follows the stator cover right down into the engine casing, exposing some oil to drip from under the stator. There's a bunch of JB Weld trying to cure over it, but I really don't think that will hold and the oil will seep out. I just hope we can get this JB weld off now and actually get it welded. The weather was bad today so my friend didn't stop over.

The problem between cycl 1 and 2 was the leaking of coolant right?

that jb weld won't hold. scrape it off, clean it as much as possible and get it welded. here are 2 pictures from roman at FOH's site. this is work he does. he's mainly a custom fighter builder. but he's definitely got talent. now, i'm not saying that every speed shop or bike shop can do this - but i'd have to think that a welding/fab shop would have no problem being able to repair yours. it's a pretty damn bad crack.

now look

hey man, it happened on the outside and it was a coolant leak.... but people just welded it right up and never had a problem again.

but the reason you don't hear about it too much anymore was that it was happening at relatively low mileage - if your '54 motor has any miles on it whatsoever, it should be good to go. i wouldn't worry about it too much. especially since youre in SOCAL (hot weather made it happen quicker)
