Default Sprockets

Need help with some sprocket choices. Someone help me understand exactly how many teeth to go up and down. I know if you go down in the front, it gives you more juice out of the whole, but you lose off the top end.... correct ? ? ? What about going up a few teeth only in the rear, and leaving the front sprocket alone ? ?

When you go down 1 in the front it is like adding 3-4 in the rear...if you go up in the rear only; it is easier on the life of the chain since it does not have to make such a sharp bend(around the countershaft sprocket), creating less friction, friction causes heat and heat is the major factor in wear characteristics...that is why we lube the chain...but be aware that going up in the rear means you need a longer chain to get around that sprocket...
Hope that helps??

I'm 2 up on the rear (stock front) and I'm very happy
As far as loosing top end, not much...165mph seems fast enough for me
