Default spocket teeth count

What would be a good number of teeth for a a rear sprocket if I was looking to get a little quicker acceleration but not bust wheelies everywhere I go. Does changing a sprocket in the rear require changing the chain?

all depends on the bike.. a good number is 2 up in rear and 1 down in front.. and yes good idea to get a new chain.. you could just add links but do you really wanna be cheap about it when your goin 100mph

if your bike is all stock and low miles >3k there is no need for a new chain, the above post of -1+2 is a good general setup. Make sure you get sprockets that match your chain pitch.

I think I read somewhere that changing the front sprocket will affect your speedo? Maybe throw it off a bit. Really I would like to avoid anything like that. I was hoping to do something not too drastic to just the rear but I dont know if thats a goos choice or not.

well first of all if you are adding teeth to sprockets you will need to add a link or two and have to get the same size and know what your doing with a chain tool.. second.. the amount that it throws off you speedo is next to nothing but if you really care then get a speedo healer

hmm What kind of differences could I expect from the -1 +2 setup as opposed to just adding a couple of teeth to the rear. I think I'm going to buy a new chain regaurdless of weather or not I change the sprockets. I dont know how long the other one has been on. The bike has under 7k on it and is a 03. But I wouldnt hurt anyway.

1 down and 2 up is pretty much the same as just 2 up or so... more you put on the back will shorten gears and make more tq and make top speed go down.. i went up -1 and 2 up i liked it for a while then i went up 5 up in rear so i could do long stand ups in 4th gear.. but personally i think i like stock the best for overall.. all depends on how you ride..

just out of curiosity, why do you like stock the best? Better all around ride?

yes.. wheelies get old after a while.. like the power that stock 1st gear has.. after you go 2 up and 1 down it makes 1st to short

I went 2 up-1 down on my 954 and was really happy.
Of course I was chasing better power wheelies.
And I lost about 15 mph top speed and that was reflected on the speedo.
I was told by my wrench that 2 up 1 down would be comparable to 4 up.
Then I did 3 up 2 down on the 929 but it seemed pretty similar since the 929 has a little less power and hp.
Either way, I'd def recommend changing the chain w/the sprockets regardless of miles, just me.
