Should I Buy it?

Should I Buy it?
Im looking at a 2002 cbr 954rr that is in mint condition. it has been very well taken care of and has 9000 miles on it. Hes asking 4000 which is retail book value. Low book value is 3000. I want a 954 but I don't want to overpay for a bike, I'm wondering if this is a bike that enough people want, because i might only keep it for a year and I don't want to lose money on it at the end of the summer. anything helps. thanks

Should you but it? Of course you should, but not for $4000. That's too much...
Why would you get rid of it in a year? That's a great bike that you will never grow out of. I said the same thing about my first 929. I was going to just ride it for a bit then sell it and make some money. 80,000 miles and years later, it took a truck pulling out in front of me to separate me and that bike. I replaced it with another 929.

You want to purchase a bike for the right reason, hopefully that is to ride and enjoy it. If your worried about resale or only having the bike for a year then why buy it? Since you have to pay for plates, taxes and possibly general maintenance.
Price wise anything in the $3k range would be solid. The market on the 954RR in my opinion is strong. People can appreciate a bike that is user friendly and does not have all the electronics of the new CBR1000RR. I have plenty of experience with 954's and realize they are great street bikes and I would have no qualms buying another one.

to be or not to be
I agree with the concept of buying it because YOU want the bike, rather than as in "invesment". It seems to me thats the pitch you gave your family when you tried to justify your intent to buy. The only bikes that make you money are the rare vintage models .......or the one you ride to the checkered flag for the winnings. Besides that, ride a few options then pick what FEELS right on you. When you find it , it'll choose you.
I have a Titanium '03 954rr i bought new and love the **** out of it. Even at 10 yrs old, she turns heads, and is a VERY forgiving bike if you like to push at the edge. Steering damper would be nice for heavy-throttle corner exits if you don't like front end 'chatter' at speed.
I also have an RC51 track bike, lotsa fun, great power, but i prefer my 954.
good luck

I would see how low you could get it see if he'll take $3,500 then JUMP all over the new negotiated price. I would probably give him 4 for it also but that's only because I wouldn't part ways with it ever. I think it's a little known secret that the 929/954 are really some of the best bikes you could ever own, low weight, great power in a really comfortable package for today's standards.
