It's a guide, not a rule. If you're just a touch over than I would not sweat it. Just so long as you didn't fill the entire 'peephole'..

All I can do is relay my own doh moment. It's been 25 years but, had my first bike, first oil change over-filled it. Didn't realize it, within a 100 miles it blew the head gasket. Now mind you, I had drastically over filled it, not just a touch like CBR mentions above.

Where the margin is between "a touch" and "holy ****!", I don't know.
But oil is cheap, replacing head gaskets is not. In my ancient wisdom, now, I would pop the drain plug for a moment and then top it back to the correct level.

If you had that much oil in there, then I'm surprised you didn't break a rod or something. The pistons must have been trying to compress it on the down stroke.

You've hit the ultimate nail on the head moose..... worse case scenario anyway.
A little over the level won't hurt though.
Don't sweat Moses. After a thousand miles or so you'll have burnt/leaked the few extra cc's of oil and never have noticed it.

if it were me, i'd loosen the bolt and drain a touch out of it. what does it hurt? it takes almost no time to do. your bike doesn't run as well with too much oil - and i'm not talking to the extreme henry and everone are talking about, but it still doesn't run as well as when it has the appropriate amount of oil.

It doesn't really matter. If you check it when the engine is warm be sure and let the oil settle for at least 15 minutes or so after the engine has been turned off to get an accurate reading.
