Default NOOB 954ER

Hey guys, I just got my first street bike, and I have never been happier, just have some questions you guys might be able to help me answer. I will explain, I have had her for a month now, put 1k on her.I am new to street bikes it has taken me a little whileto really identify some of these prolbems. she had 15k (I know is pretty high for a sport bike)whenI picked her up.A state trooper had her originally anddid all the tweaking, 1+ on the back, slip on(not sure if full system)shes an 02 red and black ,there is a tfi interface under the seat.I get some smoke (witch i have seen other posts, with simular concearns)my friend told me its normal for high performance bikes,I was courious if there was a map that could be downloaded to boost mpg?And uhh... how do you use that interface...lol.I wanted to take off the frame sliders and paint them butIcan not find a tool that fits? But this is the greatest past time ever!!!!!!

1st off welcome to the site.

15k for a sportbike is nothing if taken care of. I have personally had 2 bikes over 60k and one was almost 90k. Its a myth.

A little black smoke is pretty normal under hard acceleration or revvin it up, dont worry too much about that.

Does the box under the seat say Power Commander on it? Did you get a disc with the bike so you can load it on your pc? If you answered yes then you need to figure out if you have a full system or not so you can program it correctly (although i am guessing its probably close already). Look down near your oilpan and see if you have this on your exhaust, its a htev valve. If its there you have a slip on exhaust.

Boosting mpg,i dont think a different tune will do a lot for you, but i cant say for sure. That will mostly be controlled by your right wrist.

Lastly depending on brand of frame sliders, it should be a 15mm bolt, or i believe a t-5 hex head, i can verify that for ya tomorrow.

L-handle driver or T-handle ..... OR

spray WD-40 on bolt... wipe up so doesn't leak on fairing & engine.
Ratchet extender on ratchet
Plastic-faced hammer to persuade it along if necessary.

I wouldn't paint the sliders either.

YA im not so worried about the sliders, thanks for advice, I am bidding on a tail fairing right now on ebay, my stickers are in bad shape, but i was thinking about getting my current one painted black, I think it would look nice with the red and black graphics. I had to get a new tire as well its running me 150 is that normal?

Front or back tire and what brand are you looking at? There's a differant setup for differant riding. Are you looking more to the traction side, or looking for tires that will last longer?

I just dropped 180 on a pirelli corse, so 150 isn't bad for a rear. You should be able to lean out your engine (with a powercommander) boosting mpgs, but the engine will run hotter (954s tend to run a bit warm). You'd have to play around a bit to find out what works best. I know the SAE fuel efficient snowmobile team at Michigan Tech was running a 954 engine that was way leaned out with a powercommander, but it was a snowmobile, so they never had to worry about overheating...

Why are you getting a new tail section just because the sticker's are going? Go to www.replicals.com and get new stickers for the tail. Save you a ton of money over the tails that I see on ebay right now.

****I just spent over 200 for tire and labor,BUT it rides about $500better.I think my brake problem (as far as the rubbing) was cuased by the last owner, and how he ballenced the tire. LOOK at the pic, the tread was fine in that pic, as far as i can tell, I only put about 1500 miles on after that time, and when I had it taken off it was square, what would cause that kind of ware? would improper air pressure cause excessive ware down the middle?I dont have a garageand my bike is not regiestered yet, soI had to get this done asap.I was looking at that tail cause it was olny 20$ http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=120272867540its gone up quite a bit, butI think the 04 600rr red /black combo looks good with the black tail, either wayI need new stickers, mine look like they were cut in half with a razor they look ugly
