02 954rr was running went tick tick tick pop and shut off. Tore the bike apart yesterday and took the head off and looked at the valves and tops of pistons and cylender walls. Valves are all white and pistons are normal to. Black colored rings all look good. Cylenders are scratched but not bad enough to catch a finger nail. So what I wanna know what the he3 went pop. Sounded like a valve tick when running was def comeing from the top of motor. Any help would be great

 

Cam chain? Maybe the chain snapped. If it did then the crank and camshafts were no longer in sync and could have caused it to ran terrible then cut off...... Your CC is on the right side and wraps around the camshaft sprockets.....

Scratches in the cylinder walls seem to be normal right now. A lot of guys recently have said theyve noticed fine scratches. None of them were bothered by it and still have no issues. Im sure mine is the same way (30,xxx miles) but she runs great. Until she runs like **** ill ride it till she breaks....

 

check the valve retainers..... each valve has 2 halfmoon shaped peices under the shim's. they should be level with eachother making a circle shape. if they're popped they'll be not even with eachother, you could drop a valve. look at it in the manual.

Have the head off the bike cam chain and tensioner look good but will look under the caps

 

My top end ticks at start up for a few seconds, it's more a rattle, but whatever. What happens when you try to restart it? Why did you tear into the motor so quickly?

Well you were there, I wasn't. I would just have been a little slower to pull the engine apart. It could have been something simple.

 

sounds like a retainer went off and you dropped a valve. - ouch



all though i did hear some very loud pops that i thought could have been a valve, and it was actually just the headers seating again (it was the first time the bike heated up with them - and it was a heat pop)

 

Ok so got the head checked by a shop yesterday and not good. The head is off of a 99cbr. The cam caps were on it wrong and the cam was actually slideing back and forth a little bit. The cam has a gouge in the valley where the cover holds it down and the cover is cracked. Need all new was told man did it just get expensive. AnYone know of someone that has a complete head and all for sale let me know.
