And I Look on Craigslist all the time and see low mileage bikes, a few monthes ago when I was looking for my 929 I saw an 03' 954 with something like 783 miles on it.

You can tell by looking the bikes over real well if the bikes condition matches the miles the odometer reads, I call it road rash and wind rash. Both my 929 and 600 look like they just came off the showroom floor a few weeks ago, so I know the mileage is accurate, if you saw these bikes up close you would agree.. and they both have all the same stuff on them they left the showroom floor with including the tires, but im not going to change them, i'm just going to be careful with them till they wear out, to make sure they don't shread from the age, they are holding up fine so far though.
bikes can be low mileage, but they usually aren't near as good as bikes that have been ridden consistently. a '96 with that few miles means that it must have been sitting for a very long time. wiring goes bad once something's been sitting for very long. and if it hadn't been ran in a long time, that means oil hasn't been anywhere in the engine for that long. that's bad! you do know that with a new stator cover and new fairings, any bike can look showroom quality right? your visual inspection won't always tell the truth about the bike. ever hear of "you can't read a book by its cover"?

and about your tires... wow, you really don't know what you're talking about. if i saw an add that said "low mileage bike, still has original tires", i'd laugh. there must be flat spots on the tires, which don't wear out, they only get worse the more you ride them if it's been a real long time. besides, the tires that came out in 2001, let alone 1996 are terrible compared to today's tires. you're not properly maintaining your bike if you keep those tires.

Hey Conrice, you have absolutely no idea what your talking about and don't know what to look for when you buy a bike. What ? your mad, scared, jealous ? what ? you want to race or something ?

Not a single bolt was turned on either of these bikes, the first time the chain was adjusted on my 600F3 was when I did it this season and it still had the original oil filter on it even, old *** lookin honda filter, i'd show you if i still had it and my tires have NO FLAT SPOTS, surprised because I heard 900's love to eat rear tires, but there is no wear on it at all that I can see, this bike must have been really ***** footed and " cruised " ridden like a harley.

I don't know much about street bikes, your partially right, i'm an X moto crosser and these are my first street bikes..... plus the 600F3 I bought at the beginning of the season. The other 600F3 I had bought before this one had 6,800 miles on it and I know what your talking about with low mileage bikes, after the initial oil change I do when I went to switch to synthetic on the previous 600 there was small rusted chunks of metal in the oil, mabe part of gears or something, that was the only bike I bought with over 5000 miles on it and sold it for this F3 I have now.

I can take pictures of the tires and try to show in the pictures these " date codes " that the other guy was talking about.

And I know the stator cover or plastics were not changed on either bike, the 929 actually has a scratch on it from when a piece of wood fell and scrapped it, and it still has the scrape all from the previous owner, he never changed it.

I can tell when I go to buy a bike, I know the types of guys these are, I'm very carefull.... neither of these bikes were altered or changed in any way.

I allready said in a previous post about my F3 that the reason it has low miles is because the carbs were clogged and it would not run on it's own when the choke was shut off ! now he was too lazy to clean the carbs or bring them to a dealer shop to have it done....... yet you say something likely happened to the stator cover and plastics, but he wasn't too lazy and probably changed them ! GET REAL ! ! ........ GET ! OUTA ! HERE ! !

I got 2 great bikes, the 600F3 there has never been any reported head shake or tank slappers and they don't even sell a steering stabilizer for it, they do for the F4 but not the F3, it's stable allready, and the 929 is just unique, I can see why people would be jealous of what I got.

I was lucky to find these bikes like this, and even luckier that I got there before someone else scoffed them up before I got the chance !

tell me what you want pics of and I will post them, but not here, this isn't the 929 thread and this is way off topic, I'm sorry I mentioned it now

I read the manual and saw the types of tires these bikes ship with, for the 929 it was either bridgstone or michelin and my 929 came from the factory with the pilot sport tires, so that makes me even luckier, the 600F3 has the original battle axe tires that they don't make anymore on it.

The point trying to made here is that low mileage bikes usually have poor maintenance history. The owners usually buy them on impulse and never ride them. That is how you find bikes with low mileage. The more a bike sits without being ridden the more problems you are likely to have out of it. A good deal on a low mileage bike is not so good when you have to change oil/filter, tires, coolant, brake fluid , fork seals/fluid and usually the chain before you can safely ride the bike. The engine suffers too from sitting because all the oil drains out of the top of the motor. Valves tend to stick and on start up its metal on metal until oil gets circulated to top of the engine. Just read the posts on here about people that buy bikes that have not been ridden and all the work they have to do to get the bike to run properly.

On the other hand, you can buy a bike with higher miles that runs perfect. You stated these are your first street bikes so don't act you are the expert. I have ridden motorcycles all my life and sportbikes for the past 17 years. I think I know a little more about maintenance on them than you. My bikes may have high miles but they are maintained with the best of everything.

If you had more knowledge of street bikes you would understand why we say to change old tires even if the tread looks good. The tires look good until they loose grip and cause you to crash even at low speeds. Its not worth the chance of crashing a bike and injury to yourself not to change the tires.

Ok.... to you nay sayers. I'm no rookie just to this model bike and brand. I've been riding street now for 25 years so I know what I was looking at. I used to sell bikes in the mid 90's for a couple years till my own business was stable. This bike is legit on its miles. I can confirm the orginal tires. No they have zero flat spots but will be changed soon. The bike runs most perfect. I got confirmation that the oil was changed at 600 miles. This bike was bought by a young lady as a first bike. Not the bike to have for a first. She had a low speed get off that did scrape up a mirror and a fairing. Her insurance fixed it. But her insurance couldn't fix her be afraid of the bike. It sat till she traded it in to a HD dealer for a 883 Sportster. thats where my dealer found it California. Its now in Wisconsin. I have cleaned out the tank..... and it runs great. The battery is still good. It was left on a tender..... good call on her part. We'll see how long it lasts but fine so far. This is a picture I took the day it came home. There is a tail of the dragon sticker on it. I put it there because it appeared to have a scuff in the paint that appeared to be from picking up off the side stand and grazing maybe a wall. I have since wet sanded that area and buffed it out and its at 95%. So I know its history. All I wanted was to hear what you guys are running for oil. Seem's it opened up a can of worms in a way.

wow dude... wow

am i mad? of what? that you have 2 motorcycles that seem to be in nice condition?

am i scared? of what? that you have a low mileage bike that's nice?

am i jealous? of what? a 929?... which will bottom out on a track under hard braking... when i have a lighter, newer, and more powerful bike. or an F3? on the original tires? (are we on the barret jackson site or something where your nice fairings and original tires would matter?)

do i want to race? --- what???? when did i give you that impression? i graduated highschool a while ago, so i've been out of that phase where i have to race everyone to prove my point for a long time now

i couldn't care less about what a bike's fairings look like or whatever it is that you think i'm jealous about. (i have only washed my bike 2 times in the 2 years that i've owned my current one). i care about function, and from my expirience, bikes that haven't been ridden (or cars that haven't been driven) TEND (if you get what that means) to have more problems than those that have been ridden. a bike that has been ridden hard, as long as it's been properly maintained is still a better bet than one that has sat in a garage for 10 years.

and if you did maintain the charge on the battery, rub it with a diaper every day, change the oil every few months, rotate the tires to not have flat spots, lube the chain, etc. etc. for that many years for riding it that little --- whats the point of owning one (unless its a famous racer's bike)?

hopefully you ride your bikes into the ground, to where they get a LOT of "wind" rash. that's what they're there for. see, i like to ride my bikes and push them hard, because i get a huge thrill from riding and building them to go faster and harder, not washing and waxing them.

BadS1, nice bike (oh, and ateiri, you too (every time i see an F3, it brings back some very fond memories)). i love the titanium 954s. and the corbin is a great upgrade. hope you have fun

Well I did notice that my 600 tends to spin up faster than the 929

Bottom out ? what ? the 954 has stiffer front springs, is ok, i'm not ever taking it to the track or practicing stoppies or endo's

Double LOL....

I'm going to baby them both and ride them as if they were 250cc harley's, i'm an embarassment to the community.

I do crack the throttle open for a 5 second burst when I find a nice straightaway though.

Thanks, too bad I dropped it trying to put something under the kickstand because I had it parked in the grass and didn't want it to fall over, now I have the quintecential crack that everyone gets on their bikes when they drop them by the front blinker, but since I dropped it in the grass nothing else was affected.

Thanks I'm hoping to. I can't get over how well it feel's. It just fits me like a glove. I probably finish out the season on these tires. Around here we have just a few more weeks and they get put away for Winter. Then I'll decide what tires to put on. Need something that lasts.

Nice Bike.

Take your time to get used to it and you will not have any problems. Old tires can loose grip very easy so be careful until you get new tires. Your riding style has alot to do with which tires will be the best for you. I ride very hard on curvy roads plus do alot of interstate running back and forth to my favorite places to ride. I got 5k miles out of Michelin Pilot Power 2CT front and about 4k of the rear. I change my tire pressure often depending on the type of riding I have planned that day to increase mileage out of my tires. This time I switched to Michelin Pure's for the softer compound. If you dont use all of your tires while riding then you dont need the 2CT since the softer compound is near the edge. You could go with the regular Pilot Power which is same compound as 2CT in the middle. Michelin also has a
Pilot Road 2CT you may want to check out. My riding buddy has a 929 and runs Bridgestone BT016's on his bike and gets excellent grip from them but only gets between 2-3K miles.
