power: 1000
looks: personal preference
braking: about the same
weight: 954 is 30lbs or so lighter depending on year of the 1000
handling: 954 is lighter and has a shorter wheelbase
price: should find a 954 cheaper
comfort: 954 has a little better ergonomics (imo, im 6' 2")
aftermarket: both has lots of goodies available

The 954 is also much more rare a bike, so if you like to have something that you dont see as often the 54 is your pick.

Both are great bikes, you wont go wrong either way

It is all about personal preference.I have no complaints about my 954 and as TK said "you don't see them too often".What kind of riding are you thinkin of doin? Track, street or touring.

i went with the 54 just because of exhaust. before i bought it i read where a lot of people complained about the 1000 having a hot seat, and the exhaust rolling all over your back causing you to smell like it.

Tk is right on the money. Also sit on both of them. I love the 54. Also don't be foolde by the 1000 having more power. Power to weight on the 54 is really good

I am 5'8" bout 180lbs, I ride in any and all conditions there is, I like to race down curvy country roads, do some wheelies here and there and I am the type of person I will wake up one morning and get dressed and kiss the kids and Ol lady and be gone for 3 or 4days riding across Tx Ar and OK.. I had a 600rr for a while and Im just looking to get a bike that Im not going to feel like I want more after owning it for a couple of months.. I guess I will just have to check them both out maybe get to test ride.. Thanks for all of the feed back.. Any body in East Texas or around the Houston area looking to sale a 954 or 1000?

I picked the 954. For the looks, rarity, power, and the comfort. The 1000 may be faster but whats the point if your so far bent over that you can only ride for an hour at a time? The 954 has power rivaling 1000's and a riding position/bar height similar to 600's.
