Default FIRST BIKE. need help

Hi guys. Here's the deal. I've ridden my fair share of dirt bikes before, and have rode my father's bmw 1150 r a few times with ease. I'm looking to get a good sport bike. I know all the 600 vs. 1000 cr@p and kind of know what to expect as far as an answer to what should I get. The problem is, i'm 5'10 260 lbs. Wouldn't say I was fat, just built. Everyone says I would not fit on a 600 too well. Anyways, I'm looking at a 954rr that I could get for nothing. One owner and perfect shape. I hear this bike is the size of a 600 but with a bigger motor. Is that true or is it any bigger (not the engine size)? Also, any tips on how to go about learning to ride a 954 the right way at the beginning? I have my motorcycle's license and have ridden bikes before like I said, just never a crotch rocket. Thanks.

all 600's and 1000's for the most part are pretty identical in size, same as like a 125cc mx bike and a 250cc mx bike are prettyy much the same..except the 250 is faster and weighs alittle more.

if you know how to ride a dirtbike and exercise caution im sure you would be fine.

everyone told me its a bad idea to get a sportbike for your first bike..maybe they are right but i have had no problems and i take it easy.

the bike is only gonna go as fast as you twist the throttle.

i say go for it, you're a big dude and the 600 would probably be alittle slow for you.

i dunno man, you might want a 600 in your case. i ride a 929 and my buddy had a 954. basicly same bike. bikes are all about the same hight so if your gonna look big on a 600 your gonna look big on a 900/1000. your weight wont work a large bore motor as much as a 600 but you wont be able to crack on a 900/1000's throttle like you can a 600 and keep the front end end down.

as far as a 1st bike i say buy somthing old 1st, keepit a year then upgrade...either you will go down on the the bike or the bike well just happen to fall over or somthing haha.

but either way good luck, 929/954's are kinda a handful for the inexperance rider.

Thanks for the tips guys. I don't feel unconfident that I can ride the 954 but yes, the bike will only go as fast as I crack the throttle. Do you have any suggestions on a good bike to start on? Lots of my friends who are experienced street riders say go with a gsxr 600 or 750 maybe, or a cbr 600. I don't like the hybrid (or in between) models if you know what I mean such as the sv650. Thanks for the replies again!

the gixxer750 wouldnt be a bad choice..but you're 260 lbs, so i think a 954 would be perfect for you. you're a big dude..that 600 is gonna have to scream to get you moving.

maybe someone whos of similar size can chime in and offer insight. i knew a kid who was around 300 lbs and fat who rode a gixxer600, apparently he was riding with another guy i know who was on a zx11 and they all rode w/ each other.

whatever you decide..becareful!

zx7r, old zx9r, old gsxr 750...carbed bikes seem to be less snappy then fuel injected bikes.

sv650's are good but really slow.

91-95 zx7
96-03 zx7r
96-97 gsxr750
98-03 zx9r
94-98 yzf750r
fzr1000's

the cbr 900's 929 and 954 were super good wheelie bikes, kinda tight seating posture compaired to the above bikes i listed. my 929 comes up past 3K rpms, power wheelies 1st thru 3rd with out trying.
